Amsterdam
Cale John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's back from Amsterdam
And I think the journey did her well
Her face has lost it's touch
The tell tale signs of loneliness inside

But I love her still
And need her company still more
Come down, come down once more
And I think, the journey, did her well

She says she fell in love
With men who knew the way to treat a lady
Her life has settled for the best of things
That I couldn't give her

And it's not her fault, she's not the one to blame
Come down, come down, come down once more

And I do believe the journey did her well
Yes I do believe the journey did her well.

I went to Amsterdam and fell in love there; I did not expect it, nor did I want it, but I did. I felt lonely before. It was the first time I went there and I saw the buildings and the canals and the trees without leaves, and I felt the Sun shining on my face while he curved himself over the balcony rail next to me. I felt adored for the first time in so long. I had to come back South, and I left him there. We promised we would see each other again - he said he knew we would, and I felt like I knew that as well, but I was afraid I was just letting my hopes have the best of me.

Coming down once more to my hometown, the city I love, it feels like She has written this song for me. I fell in love with a man who knew the way to treat me; I fell in love with the water, the skies, the subtle smell of peppermint in the cold wind. Home didn't lost me, and neither did he. I don't feel lonely anymore. Now I know we will see each other again. The journey did me well.
