Amsterdam
Cale John Lyrics

And I think the journey did her well
Her face has lost it's touch
The tell tale signs of loneliness inside
But I love her still
And need her company still more
Come down, come down once more
She says she fell in love
With men who knew the way to treat a lady
Her life has settled for the best of things
That I couldn't give her
And it's not her fault, she's not the one to blame
Come down, come down, come down once more
And I do believe the journey did her well
Yes I do believe the journey did her well.
The lyrics to Cale John's song Amsterdam are about a woman who has returned from a journey to Amsterdam and how it has changed her. The singer observes that the journey has done her well and that she looks happier and more content than before. He mentions that loneliness had taken a toll on her face, but now that is gone. Despite the fact that her life has settled for the best of things, he still loves her and needs her company more than ever.
The woman reveals that she has fallen in love with men who knew how to treat a lady, which the singer cannot do. He acknowledges that it is not her fault, and he is not the one to blame for her newfound happiness. The chorus repeats that the journey has done her well, and the singer believes it to be true.
The lyrics are reflective of a sense of longing and an inability to meet the emotional needs of the woman he loves. Cale John's soothing voice combined with the simple yet poignant lyrics make it a popular song among fans.

I went to Amsterdam and fell in love there; I did not expect it, nor did I want it, but I did. I felt lonely before. It was the first time I went there and I saw the buildings and the canals and the trees without leaves, and I felt the Sun shining on my face while he curved himself over the balcony rail next to me. I felt adored for the first time in so long. I had to come back South, and I left him there. We promised we would see each other again - he said he knew we would, and I felt like I knew that as well, but I was afraid I was just letting my hopes have the best of me.
Coming down once more to my hometown, the city I love, it feels like She has written this song for me. I fell in love with a man who knew the way to treat me; I fell in love with the water, the skies, the subtle smell of peppermint in the cold wind. Home didn't lost me, and neither did he. I don't feel lonely anymore. Now I know we will see each other again. The journey did me well.
