Ballad of Cable Hogue
Calexico Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I live out yonder where the snakes and scorpions run
Got myself a little goldmine to bank on
But one day my heart sank when I saw madame in town
I knew her love would be the death of mine

L'amour passait, l'amour obsolate
Pourquoi perdre sa vie chercher l'or d'un coeur?
Je ne me noierai pas dans ce dasert mystique
Je ferme mes comptes et je repars

Do me a favor while I'm hanging here
Take this gold and go and hide
"Ne gigote pas, chéri"
"Sur ta corde, pendu"
Don't worry, I'll be free in no time

She promised me she would be there when I'd return
She didn't say she'd have a whole army there as well
She whispered, "je t'aime, baby" as she fired that gun at me
"Mais je n'ai plus de temps"

I should've stayed way out yonder
Better off with the scorpions and snakes
Every act which has no heart will be found out in the end
Guess I'm a little late this time

'Cause her love would be the death of mine
Mine, all mine

Overall Meaning

The Ballad of Cable Hogue is a story of a man who lives in the desert, out yonder where the snakes and scorpions run. He has a little goldmine to bank on, but one day, his heart sank when he saw madame in town. He knows that her love would be the death of mine. He contemplates and concludes that love is passa and obsolete, but he still loves her immensely. He tells her to take his gold and go and hide while he is hanging over there, and he will be free in no time.

Unfortunately, when he returns, instead of finding his love waiting for him, he finds an army waiting for him, which fires at him as he hears her whispering, "Je t'aime, baby." The song ends with a realization that every act which has no heart will be found out in the end but unfortunately, it is a little too late for him.

The ballad conveys a message that love can be dangerous and can lead to destruction. The lyrics symbolize how human emotions have the potential to bring out the best and the worst in people. The song is a tragic story of a man who trades his freedom and safety for love and gold only to be deceived by the very person he trusted the most.

This video made me smile, missing Tucson and Calexico. Just seeing it for the first time. Didn't know Mirianne Dissard was in a Calexico video. I've been stuck in NY too long! :)

Hi

Tommy Bohman

This song has been a favorite since "Hot Rail" was released and the title captured my attention at once. Sam Peckinpah did a 1970 Western with the same title. A marvellous film.
Please try to find Paul Seydor's "Peckinpah: The Western Films - A Reconsideration" (1997).
David Weddle, who wrote the foreword to this classic, called it "one of the finest pieces of film criticism ever written."

I have always loved the Latin influenced Spanish titles with trumpets and all: "El Picador", "Muleta", and "Tres Avisos" - brilliant stuff! I like to play them in succession.
