The band's lineup has constantly fluctuated since its formation, with the only constant being singer-songwriter Larry Blackmon, yet they continue to tour to this day. An outlandish, in-your-face stage presence, a strange sense of humor, and a hard-driving funky sound that criss-crossed a few musical boundaries earned Cameo countless initial comparisons to Parliament/Funkadelic. However, Cameo eventually wore off accusations of being derivative by transcending their influences and outlasting almost every single one of them.

Throughout the 70s and 80s, the group remained up with the times and occasionally crept ahead of them, such that they became influences themselves upon younger generations of R&B and hip-hop acts. By the time the group's popularity started to fizzle in the late 80s, a series of hits were left in the band's wake, ranging from greasy, funky workouts to smooth ballads to swinging synthesized tracks and more. Further separating Cameo from their forebears was the fact that they didn't have a diaper-clad guitarist. Instead, they had a codpiece-wearing lead vocalist in Larry Blackmon.

Today, the group's iconic single "Word Up", released in 1986 from the album of the same time, remains a radio staple. The U.S. Hot Dance Singles and U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart topper has also been famously covered by artists such as the hard rock band Gun and the alternative metal group Korn. Other popular Cameo singles include "Attack Me With Your Love", "Candy", "Freaky Dancin'","I Just Want To Be", and "Sparkle".

Doesn't matter if they're a 13 member or a three member band, if it's Wayne Cooper or Larry Blackmon on lead vocals, they've always maintained truly great, quality music. I've been a Cameo fan since the mid-seventies. Ladies and gentlemen the quality and perfection of instruments paired with vocals don't get much better than this group. I was overseas when this came out. Where the hell was this video 40 years ago. Damn, what a performance. My daughter is in her high school band. She plays trombone in the marching band and tuba in wind symphony. I am so happy that she has embraced music and a higher level than just listening to the radio. Every now and then I have to break her off by showing her videos like this. When musicians were ACTUAL musicians. No autotune crap. I have to point out how bands were actual groups of people where everybody played an instrument and had to work hard at their craft. I was up on this song but never knew this video existed until today. Too Bad and Sad Wyane Cooper passed away. He had a voice and he reminded me of Bobby Debarge. Being a truck driver you miss stuff like this. Glad to see CAMEO kept funkin even with the loss of Cooper.

Before Word Up it was Hanging Downtown, Alligator Woman, Freaky Dancing, Skin I’m In, Tribute to Bob Marley, Grove With You & many more. A very underrated Group but Funky as Hell.

Good thing they switched up their styles because they weren't going to make it like this. You can tell there were some creative differences going on, because there is a HUGE difference between the sound of this version of Cameo, and the mid 80's Cameo version that we all know and love!

A great song many forgot about and part of my late teens growing up in San Francisco. Around the time I was trying to go GQ and change from my old hood ways. Sadly I felt I went in this journey on my own bc none of my friends made that life turn around and either dead or in prison. Thank you lord for showing me he way and pointing me in the right direction!
