Divorce
Cameron Alex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, in the age of conversation
I guess I got the gift of gab
But when you shine your spotlight on me
My little microphone turns to sand
And I've killed little baby rabbits
I've killed microscopic crabs
But I never killed a feeling
Like the one you and me had

Now, did you see where my love went?
Because it ain't here in my hand
You need to jet there, darling, between your legs
I couldn't bear another needy man

I got friends in Kansas City with a motherfucking futon couch
If that's how you want to play it
I'm drinking in the dark because my battery's all ran out
All you got to do is say it
Divorce

I could leave your ovulation
To meet Elon and his clan
With his batteries full of sunlight
And his cars that run on sand
And I go weak with constipation
From all the pills and the spam
Though we drink our Mother Energy
There ain't no women for the needy man

Oh, did you see where my love went?
Because it ain't here in my hand
You need to jet there, darling, between your legs
I couldn't bear another needy man

I got friends in Kansas City with a motherfucking futon couch
If that's how you want to play it
I'm drinking in the dark because my battery's all ran out
All you got to do is say it
Divorce, divorce, divorce

All you got to do is say it
Divorce, divorce, divorce

All you got to do is say it
Divorce

Overall Meaning

The song "Divorce" by Cameron Alex is about a relationship that has come to an unhappy end. The first stanza talks about the singer being good at talking and expressing himself but when it comes to his former lover, he feels muzzled. He has done bad things but has never destroyed a good feeling like the one he had with her. In the second stanza, the singer asks if she knows where his love went because he doesn't have it in him anymore. He mentions his inability to deal with another needy man and offers to leave her to meet Elon Musk and his battery-powered world. He also talks about how alcohol has become his go-to, as his "battery's all ran out." The chorus repeats the word "divorce" as an evident clue that the relationship has ended and he's ready to move on.

Overall, the song is about a relationship that has become toxic and has left the singer feeling drained and unable to cope. He knows that the right thing to do is to separate and start over. However, he feels powerless and stuck in the situation, hence his need for the former lover to vocalize and make clear their intent to end things for good.

Do you like Alex Cameron ?

His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Forced Witness came out in '17 I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Cameron has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '19, Cameron released this, Divorce, his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "Marlon Brando", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the Cameron himself

Alex Cameron is making the most exciting, interesting music right now. It's unique pop music written from the perspective of oddball characters–yet still feels genuine and honest.
