Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.

And she's waiting for you on the outside
For as long as we've been together baby
How can you tell me this is goodbye?
'Cos I'm not breaking down
Oh it's not because of my pride
The reason you don't see no tear baby
I guess I'm just too hurt to cry
Baby!
I'm too hurt to cry
I'm too hurt to cry
Ain't no tears in my eyes
I'm just too hurt to cry
I neglected myself baby
Devoted my life to you
Listen
To ensure your happiness baby
There was nothing I wouldn't do
No, no, no
But I guess you found what you wanted
I feel so bad I could just die
The reason you don't see no tear baby
I guess I'm just too hurt to cry
Baby!
I'm too hurt to cry
I'm too hurt to cry
Ain't no tears in my eyes
I'm just too hurt to cry
I can't stand for you to leave me
I can't stand for you to say goodbye
I'm just going to walk away baby
I'll turn my back
I want you to walk on out the door
I don't want to see you leave me
I just can't stand to see you leave me baby
I'm just too hurt, I'm too hurt, I'm too hurt
I'm just too hurt to cry
Ohhh I don't you to leave me
Too hurt to see me cry baby
The song "Too Hurt to Cry" by Candi Staton is a heart-wrenching ballad that tells the story of a woman who has been devoted to her lover but he is leaving her. She sees his bags packed and ready to leave, and he tells her that it's time for them to say goodbye. She can't fathom how he could say that after all the time they've been together. The woman is not breaking down because of her pride but rather she is too hurt to cry. Her tears have dried up, but it doesn't mean that she isn't feeling the pain of losing the man she loves.
The woman has neglected herself and devoted her life to her lover to ensure his happiness. She did everything she could for him, but he found what he was looking for somewhere else. She feels so bad that she could just die. However, the reason why there are no tears in her eyes is that she's too hurt to cry. The pain is too much, and she can't bring herself to display her vulnerability. She doesn't want to see him leave, but she's too hurt to stop him.
The song is an emotional plea from a woman who has been abandoned by the man she loved. She is devastated and doesn't know how to deal with the pain. The lyrics are powerful and poignant, and Candi Staton's soulful voice conveys the emotions of the song perfectly. The song is a testament to the power of love and the devastation that can be caused when that love is lost.
