Sic'em Pigs
Canned Heat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everytime you do
Your do your thing out loud
Sic 'em pigs on you
Feelin' good
Have some fun
Go downtown
But don't you
Don't you wander around
Sic 'em pigs on you
Watch what you do
Watch what you say
You on the street
You better play the games their way
Sic 'em pigs on you
Grab your guns bar bums too
City Hall
There's gonna, gonna get you too
Sic 'em freaks on you
Gotta get out o' here

It's too hot
Golly, they're lookin' for you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Canned Heat song "Sic'em Pigs" speak of the danger and risk that comes with living outside the norm and doing things that may be frowned upon by society or the law. The phrase "sic 'em pigs" refers to calling in the police or other authorities to put an end to someone's behavior. The song warns the listener to be careful and watch their every move, as the pigs are always watching and waiting to strike. The lyrics also express the desire to have fun and live life on one's terms, but the cautionary message runs deep throughout the song. The final verse seems to suggest that the singer is being hunted down and must leave the area to escape the authorities.

The song can be interpreted as a commentary on the social and political climate of the time. The late 60s and early 70s saw widespread social and political unrest, with protests against the Vietnam War, civil rights movements, and a general sense of rebellion against the status quo. The authorities, represented by the pigs in the song, were often seen as oppressive and corrupt by the counterculture movement. The lyrics seem to suggest that even though there may be a desire to live freely and outside of the rules, the consequences may be severe.

It is nice to hear the Henry Vestine speaking voice, for those of us that didn't know him personally.

I first heard this on "Flashback Sunday" on KGB, San Diego back in '85. Didn't catch who did it. Someone told me they thought it was Humble Pie. THanks to you great folks putting this on You-Tube, I'm finally able to know who actually preformed it and hear it again!

@areubaked

Not EVERY radio station banned Sic 'Em Pigs! I worked at WBUS-FM/Miami back in 1971 and we played the hell out of this cut. The local cops would call us on the request line and give us "the heat" for airing it - but that only motivated us to play it even more! "Special dedication going out to the BSO...the Broward County Sheriff's Office...for beating the crap out of hippies! Thanks, Piggies..."

Great song I had the album when it came out.

WBCN in Boston played the crap out of this in '70. A timeless memory (uhh what memory isn't timeless?)
