Vitamins aren't regulated by the US FDA, unfortunately. This is really dumb for sure, and they need to regulate them. This is why vitamin C gummies were probably allowed to be sold like this in the first place. I agree with you.

A while back, during a middle school “back to school night”, parents were encouraged to bring treats and snacks which were laid out on a table for all to share. I was horrified to find someone put a big box of gummy vitamin packages there and kids were taking them! I quickly pointed this out to one of the science teachers who was rightly panicked and who made sure to remove them but who knows how many kids are them believing they were candy. There is just too much chance for accidents.

I’m an Australian travelling throughout various parts of Asia and Europe an in Bangladesh, I once ate almost an entire bottle of flouride tablets because it was tasty and I was young. I probably would of died if I hadn’t vomited it all out.

Thank god for this video !! I had seen this a few years back and never though it would be critical to me in the future ! My mom really loves gummy candies , and she didn’t feel well in the past few days. Today she told me how she ate 2 jars of these candies only today , and when I inspected it I saw this was the vitamin kind of candies and only 2 were allowed per day ! My sister once ate an entire bottle of Flintstones vitamins. Luckily my mother found her with the bottle and called poison control immediately. They had her give ipecac syrup (not sure that's recommended anymore) and watching my sister almost propelled across the room by the force of her own vomiting was one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. I think the next most horrifying thing was watching this same sister literally somersaulting down a flight of stairs when she tripped. My sister had it pretty rough.

Thanks to him translating, I started memorizing what those things mean and even without knowing the decease or having any medical knowledge, I can tell hypercalcemia means high presence of calcium in the blood.

I like it too, though it's obvious to me, because I pay attention to names meanings. I like it, because more people may understand some names they use on regular basis. Sometimes even the simplest words are amazing. Like the word "charming" that comes from "charm". Or "attractive" from "attraction". Like magnets. Coming to each other. Words are beautiful when You understand them. Not just know the meanings, but their origin. The actual meaning why they are like that. And most scientific names are easy, when You understand where do they come from. Or unicorn literally means singlehorn. And narwhals literally means unicorn too. Monoceros is the same as unicorn, just grom greek, instead of latin.

In medical school years ago, there was a previously healthy patient in hospital with liver failure, and all tests were coming back negative (not hepatitis viruses, not from prescription meds, etc). Another med student asked if he could do a practice medical history with them, and the person kindly said yes. When asked by the attending doctors, the patient said they took daily vitamins, but it was only in the lengthy chat with the medical student that it came out how many vitamins —- well over the recommended amounts every day. The liver damage was found to have been to Vit A overdose. Remember that “natural” things, taken at doses never seen in nature, often arent safe. The dose makes the poison, and even water and oxygen can harm health if at high enough concentrations.

In my country, such vitamin gums cannot be bought in normal stores. We only have them in pharmacies. and if you buy them in the pharmacies, the pharmacy assistant always explains before she give it to you, how you have to use it.
I find it a bit dangerous that you can buy that anywhere in the US.

My family and I once went to a candy store in Barcelona that had a whole gimmick around its bulk candy being presented like medicine, and you'd take them home in clear plastic pill bottles.

It never really occured to me how dangerous something like that could be, especially with a language barrier going on.

Loved that episode. Makes me think I should focus on a whole foods diet & ratchet down my supplements. I never take what's recommended on the bottle. I usually take them once every few days or once a week. I've heard before that too much vit A was toxic. Sometimes I grab some herbs from the forest & I just checked & I was slightly overdosing on some days, but since I only take them in the spring/summer window, I'm ok. Should not consume more than 4 cups of wild herbs per day. Thks. 🎉🎉🎉

So far only a few videos in on your channel, but thank you, has been really interesting, always had interest in medicine to a degree but never felt I had it in me to deal with it after what I saw my mum deal with regularly as an ED nurse and what I saw in aged care in placement.

But like my mum who passed away 3yrs from complications in life, you seem to genuinely care and your explanations are wonderful.

I’m 13 and I only have the recommend amount of multi-vitamins/gummy vitamins on the box/container and don’t eat any for people older then me.
This video made me realise It’s very important to read the box and use a translation app like google translate if you don’t speak a language to determine what a food item is if your unsure, especially if there are large letters on the container witch could show important text.

A box of fruit gummies is about $2, depending on brand, flavor assortment, and location.

A bottle of gummy vitamins can run you $10 or more when measured by the same criteria.

If my kid asks for a $10 bottle of candy, that's going to be a hard pass until he's old enough to earn his own money for that shit. But I also like to think that I wouldn't let him go HAM on a package of random pink blobs before translating the damn label.

Again, they weren't from the States so they were not used to American prices. Added to the fact that they spoke little, if at all, english. You can argue anything but the fact is that jumping into a totally different culture with different monetary system with vastly different scale is not something that just is learned in a short time.
Our family went to a trip abroad back in the 80's, back then it wasn't as common as it is nowdays and it was the first time for any of us. My parents spent really, really little on the trip because all the prices were roughly 100x larger than back home. A bread that cost 3 coins at home cost 300 there and although they knew about it, it was a constant source of confusion when everything costs different amount and lots of it.
That being a extreme example, you should not assume that the American way of life is quick and easy to learn. Added source of confusion are differing taxes between countries/states. Where i live, candies are imposed a sweet tax making them more expensive and at the same you can grab 100 pill bottle of multivitamins at the cost of large bag of candy. Also vitamin supplements are not categorized as a 'pharmaceuticals' here and store have liberty to place them where they want, in my local store candies and vitamin supplements are right next to each other. And in my recollection candy vitamins came to the markets only decade or so ago, before i think it was not allowed. When i was a kid, there was no such things here.
Yeah, that's here and American way is different.

@@alaric_ This was not a mistake that happened one time. Eating an entire bottle of vitamin candies probably would have made his stomach hurt, but it would have taken weeks or months of eating too many before his bones began to break.
I understand how a visitor might get confused by an exchange rate. A cab driver in the Czech Republic charged me 1000 crowns (close to $50 or €40) for a very short ride. I fell for the trick...once!
Simple arithmetic sorted that out quickly. That's why it's difficult for me to see how the mother kept paying so much for vitamin gummies for such a long time.

Honestly this is one of the consumption problem videos that I understand because usually when I see "a woman ate gas station sushi. When I was a little kid, in the late 1960s, we were on vacation in Yugoslavia, and I ate half a bottle of Chocks vitamins - they were more of the normal chalky tablet consistency but they tasted good. My parents freaked out and took me to the hospital, but the doctor there said all I needed to do was drink lots of water for the next day or so. I didn’t suffer any Ill effects so I guess he was right. But I’m sure it also helped that the amount of vitamins in these tablets over 50 years ago was probably a lot less than newer ones, plus the number of tablets per bottle was also less than now.

My mom always told us that the gummies were medicine and vitamins and NOT candy. That’s why we stayed away from it and there were times where we’d see the bottle sitting at random places and we’d get the temptation but never eat them anyway. She is a great role model and a great mother. Teach your kids that it’s medicine or vitamins and NOT candy. If that won’t make them stay away from the gummies, make up something that could scare them.
