Pachuco Cadaver
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A squid eating dough in a Polyethylene bag
Is fast and bulbous, got me?
When she wears her bolero then she begin to dance
All the pachucos start witholdin' hands
When she drives her Chevy, sissies don't dare to glance
Yellow jackets 'n red debbles buzzin' round her hair, hive-ho
She wears her past like a present
Take her fancy in the past
Her sedan skims along the floorboard
Her two pipes hummin' carbon come
Got her wheel out of a B-29 Bomber, Brody knob amber
Spanish fringe 'n talcum tazzles forever amber
She looks like an old squaw Indian
She ninety-nine, she won't go down
Avocado green 'n alfalfa yellow adorn her to the ground
Tattoos 'n tarnished utensils, a snow white bag full o' tunes
Drives a cartoon around
Drives a cartoon around
Broma-Seltzer blue umbrella keeps her up off the ground
Round red sombreros wrap her high tap horsey shoes
When she unfolds her umbrella, pachucos got the blues
Her lovin' make me so happy
If I smiled, I'd crack my chin
Her eyes are so peaceful, thinks it's heaven she been
Her skin is as smooth as the daisies
In the center where the sun shines in
Smiles as sweet as honey
Her teeth as clean as the combs where the bees go in
Who she walks flowers surround her
Let their nectar come into the air around her

She loves, her love sticks out like stars
Her lovin' stick out like stars

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Pachuco Cadaver" by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band describe a woman who is unapologetically herself and embodies a mix of cultures and styles. The song starts with a surreal image of a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag, described as "fast and bulbous", which can be interpreted as a metaphor for something strange and otherworldly. The woman in the song wears a bolero and dances with the pachucos, a subculture of Mexican-American youths who dressed in zoot suits and listened to swing music in the 1940s. Her Chevy car is a symbol of freedom and rebellion, and the buzz of yellow jackets and red devils around her hair adds to the sense of danger and excitement.

The woman's past is also a prominent theme in the song, with the lyrics stating that she wears it "like a present" and takes "her fancy in the past". This suggests that she is proud of her heritage and traditions, and refuses to conform to societal expectations. Her appearance is described in vivid detail, with references to her native American roots (looking like an old squaw Indian), her age (ninety-nine, but refusing to go down), and her quirky fashion sense (avocado green and alfalfa yellow). She is also depicted as a lover, with the singer praising her peaceful eyes, smooth skin, and sweet smile.

Overall, "Pachuco Cadaver" is a celebration of non-conformity and individuality, with surreal and vivid imagery that adds to its sense of rebelliousness and free-spiritedness.

Yeah sure!
Everyone will tell you Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, so yeah thats a good one, but also these are good too:

Modern Day Jazz Symposium - Charles Mingus
Live At Massey Hall - "The Quintet"
Giant Steps - John Coltrane
Out There - Eric Dolphy
Filles De Killimanjaro - Miles Davis

That's a pretty broad range of different types of jazz and iI think a good sample.

Also listen to Folk Forms no. 1 by Charles Mingus, that ones really groovin'.

This was released as a single. A large entertainment corporation actually believed there was a possibility that this could be a commercial hit song.

@DoctorOcculator

When a song starts with
'Squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous' you know you're in for a wild ride !

@GladEnthusiast

Got me?

@uriahroseii1026

@@neighbor4772 It's aural art, but some of the stuff Don did I think was expressly meant to be noise since he probably thought it'd be funny. If you listen to Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, some of the earlier free jazz that came before and Howlin' Wolf, you can kinda see where Beefheart came from.

@adrianflores2921

When the song is called Pacheco Cadaver, you know you’re in for a wild ride
