Nightmare
Caravan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sat down, turn around boy, gotta let out of here
Silly little sod, you made me shed a tear
Showing me minor roads of very cold
Making the world so young and me so old

Time dying, time dying, doing what I could in the day
Lazy little swine, I'm sure I heard you say
"Sure I took a trip or two inside my head"
Was there in the road you showed me, stone cold dead

Yours was a face I remember very well
See it, touch, feel, even smell
Imagine how I felt when the face I saw was me
Chrissakes end down the line, set me free

When the time is over - oh, oh, oh
And you're feeling somewhat colder - oh, oh, oh
And your face is on the run
And your body's almost done
Well, you won't have to notice anymore

Come inside and tell me - oh, oh, oh
What you're tryin' to sell me - oh, oh, oh
Did it ever cross your mind ?
Did you ever read a sign ?
Well, you won't have to notice anymore

Hear me a-callin', I've got a dream in my hand
I close my eyes and realise, now I understand

If you've got a problem - Christ, you've got to unload
The price you pay is that you may explode

Overall Meaning

Caravan’s “Nightmare” is a hauntingly vivid account of a psychedelic trip gone wrong. The song opens with the singer urging the listener to escape, but awfully aware that it might not be possible. The verses then describe the mental and physical deterioration that comes with prolonged drug use. By the end of the song, the singer arrives at the chilling conclusion that the only way to escape the hallucinations is through death. The chorus captures the lassitude and fatalism of the drug-induced haze when the singer sings about not taking notice anymore, and questioning if the person ever read a sign or thought about the consequences of their choices.

The lyrics are well-crafted to provide a vivid picture of the state of mind of someone going through a disturbing trip. The vocal delivery and instrumentation all match the dark, hallucinatory mood of the song. The song has a haunting and eerie quality that makes it both menacing and captivating. It is a reflection of the 1960s counterculture and the dangers of drug use.
