Surprise Surprise
Caravan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After all this time it's got no better
And the words just seem to pass me by
So I think of you in the morning
Singing a song to fill my eyes

Here I go
Can you sing along?
Stopped to say hello
Something overcame me
Didn't want to go and pass you by
Looked at me so fair
Saw the sun upon you
Blow and slip through your hands

Summer stole away
All the breath within me
Leavin' me gaspin' for some air
Have so much to say
Hardly seem to matter
You were more than some one day

Didn't we believe we were so?
Didn't we believe we were something?
Didn't we believe we were more?
So much more than words can say
Suddenly sunshine, sudden love

When the years are gone
And we live on memories
Will you still remember me that way?
Like I do you too
No matter where I could be
Something's going to steal away

Didn't we believe we were so?
Didn't we believe we were something?
Didn't we believe we were more?
So much more than I don't know
Suddenly sunshine, sudden love

Didn't want to go
Didn't want to leave you
Something pulling me back hurt me so

Wakin' up I found feet upon the pillow
Head and shoulders on the ground

Overall Meaning

The song "Surprise Surprise" by Caravan captures the nostalgia and longing of a past love which now seems distant. The opening lines suggest that despite the passage of time, the singer's feelings about the relationship have not improved. "And the words just seem to pass me by" hints at communication breakdown, with the singer feeling unable to articulate their emotions in a way that can be understood by their partner. Yet, they find solace in thinking of their loved one in the morning and singing a song, even if it is only to themselves.

The second verse describes a chance encounter: "Stopped to say hello/ Something overcame me/ Didn't want to go and pass you by." The word "surprise" comes to mind, as the singer is unexpectedly reunited with their former partner. They are struck by how fair and radiant the person looks, as the sun shines down upon them. However, the reference to the sun "blow[ing] and slip[ping] through your hands" suggests that the moment is fleeting and cannot be grasped.

The final stanza reflects on the transience of life, and how memories can outlast actual experiences. Despite the distance ("No matter where I could be"), the singer hopes that they will be remembered in the same way they remember their loved one. The use of repetition ("Didn't we believe we were...") emphasises how certain they once were about their relationship, and signals a sense of doubt and regret, as though the singer is trying to convince themselves that they made the right decision. The song ends with a surreal image - "feet upon the pillow, head and shoulders on the ground" - that suggests the singer's attempts to cling onto their memories have taken them to a different plane of existence.

Love Caravan and all the rest of the Canterbury Scene. Try Nine Feet Underground, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I got into Caravan in a big way in about 73 when I was still at school.
They played the university when I was there in about 77. I had every album and loved them all. Still do.
Thanks for giving them some time.

So many albums to choose from...Dave Sinclair and Phil Miller lineup the best for me.

chrissilverhand1

I don't think Phil Miller was ever in Caravan. Steve Miller played keyboards (1971 -2) Phil was in several bands related to the Canterbury scene, notably Hatfield and The North, Matching Mole and National Health.

You gotta hear, " Son of There's No Place Like Homerton ", by Hatfield and the North. At that time in my life, it was a revelation.

A Pocketful Of Heep

A bit too mellow. Try listening to 'Chiefs and Indians' by Caravan. Much more up tempo with a nice variety of instruments.
