The Wind
Carey Mariah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wind has taken you
You're free finally at peace
So still you lie
Leaving your cares behind

The pain is gone
Gone with the spirit in your eyes
Now you're wandering around
Above us
Looking downward as we cry

You've flown into the wind
Escaping all the hurt within
Took to the sky
Leaving all the world behind

So young to die
How could you let it all pass you by?

And do the wind go so many dreams
That you held inside
Now you're just a memory
Burning in my mind, my mind

So young to die
How could you let life pass you by
And now you'll never know I loved you
And now you'll never know I cared

I really loved you
And now you'll never know

You'll only fade
Into the wind

Overall Meaning

In Mariah Carey's The Wind, the singer is lamenting the passing of a loved one who has died too soon. The wind is the symbol of freedom and peace, and thus represents the release from pain and suffering that the deceased has finally achieved. The song paints a vivid picture of the sorrow and longing that the living feel for someone who has passed away.

The lyrics express the idea that it is impossible for the living to fully understand the experience of the dead, as they are now beyond the reach of earthly concerns. The line "The pain is gone, gone with the spirit in your eyes" highlights this idea, showing that the pain and suffering that the person endured in life are now a distant memory. The song speaks to the idea that the dead are not truly gone but have simply passed beyond our line of sight, and we are left to mourn their loss in our own way.

The chorus repeats the phrase "So young to die, how could you let it all pass you by?" which is a poignant reminder that life is short and we should make the most of it. The verses describe the sense of regret that the living feel for not being able to show the deceased how much they were loved and cared for. The line "Now you'll never know I loved you, and now you'll never know I cared" underscores the central theme of the song, which is the importance of expressing what we feel before it is too late.

This song was originally composed as an instrumental piece way back in 1954 by jazz pianist Russ Freeman for the "Chet Baker and Strings" album. (Russ was my dad!) The song has since been recorded by over forty different singers, with different lyrics. Mariah wrote the lyrics for this version, which my dad thought were wonderful. Enjoy!
