Top Of The World
Carl & Pearl Butler Lyrics

Two seasons down since you ran away
I counted back by seconds right down to the day
I checked the papers, searched the stations, not a trace
I traveled to every corner just to see your face
On top of the world
Just hoping to see you
I'd come back down to earth right now
If I knew you'd be there too
If I knew you'd be there too
I found a trail of footprints out across the snow
I saw a ship in the distance but where did it go?
It's hard to hold my head up without you around
But even if I fall I'll still keep my ear to the ground
On top of the world
Just hoping to see you
I'd come back down to earth right now
If I knew you'd be there too
If I knew you'd be there too
Run away, run away baby
Here today, gone forever maybe
Out of sight, out of mind lately
Gone astray thinking it would save me
Far away and feeling even farther apart
A canyon pushing on the walls of my heart
I think I heard the sirens calling out my name
I know it was your voice I think I'm going insane
On top of the world
Just hoping to see you
I'd come back down to earth right now
If I knew you'd be there too
On top of the world
Just hoping to see you
I'd come back down to earth right now

If I knew you'd be there too
If I knew you'd be there too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Carl & Pearl Butler's song "Top of the World" depict a sense of longing and desperation for someone who has run away. The singer reflects on the passing of time since the person's departure and expresses their tireless search for any sign of their whereabouts. They mention checking newspapers and radio stations, desperate to catch a glimpse of the person they miss so much. The singer even travels to various places, hoping to see their face once again.

The phrase "on top of the world" is used metaphorically to describe the singer's intense desire to reunite with the person who left. It represents a state of ultimate bliss and happiness that they believe they would feel if they were able to see this person again. They long to come back down from this high, to return to reality, but only if it means being able to be with the person they are searching for.

The second verse introduces a trail of footprints and a ship in the distance, creating a sense of mystery and uncertainty. The singer wonders where the person has gone, and the absence of their presence weighs heavily on their ability to hold their head up. Despite the challenges they face, the singer remains committed to keeping their ear to the ground, never giving up hope and listening intently for any signs or clues that may lead them to their loved one.

The bridge of the song explores the singer's conflicted emotions, as they contemplate the possibility that the person may be gone forever. They feel out of sight and out of mind, and their longing has led them to a state of feeling even farther apart. The mention of a canyon pushing on the walls of their heart signifies the immense pain and emptiness caused by the separation. They believe they hear the person's voice in their mind, causing them to question their own sanity.

Overall, "Top of the World" tells a story of a person desperately searching for someone who has run away, expressing their deep longing and the toll it takes on their emotional well-being. The lyrics explore themes of hope, loss, and the relentless pursuit of love.

How can there be no comments on this excellent documentary. If the only song they ever recorded was “Let’s watch the bluebirds” I would have been in Opry heaven. They were a great duo. Thanks for sharing.

@palmborotn

What nice costumes they wore. I used to watch them on TV in the 60's. I think they really loved each other. After Pearl died, Carl only lived 4 years. I am sure he really missed her.
