If I Could
Carl Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I could
I'd protect you from the sadness in your eyes
Give you courage in a world of compromise
Yes, I would
If I could
I would teach you all the things I never learned
And I'd help you cross the bridges that I burned
Yes, I would

If I could
I would try to shield your innocence from time
But the part of life I gave you isn't mine
I watched you grow
So I could let you go

If I could
I would help you make it through the hungry years
But I know that I can never cry your tears
But I would
If I could

If I live
In a time and place
Where you don't want to be
You don't have to walk along this road with me
My yesterday
Won't have to be your way

If I knew
I'd have tried to change the world I brought you to
Through there wasn't very much that I could do
But I still would
If I could

If, if I could
I would try to shield your innocence from time
But the part of life I gave you isn't mine.
I watched you grow
So I could let you go

If I could
I would help you make it through the hungry years
But I know that I can never cry your tears
But I would
If I could

Yes, I would

Yes, I would
If I could

Overall Meaning

The song "If I Could" by Carl Anderson is a poignant reflection about a parent's love for their child. The lyrics express a deep desire to protect the child from the sadness and compromises of the world, to teach them the things that the parent never had the chance to learn, and to help them navigate their way through life's difficult times. However, the parent also recognizes that they cannot shield their child from everything, that they have to let them go and make their own way in the world. The song is a testament to the complex emotions that come with being a parent - the love, the pride, the sadness, and the longing.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of generational inheritance and the weight that it can carry. The parent recognizes that they have given their child a part of their life, but also acknowledges that it isn't necessarily theirs to give. The child will have to make their own way in the world, and the parent must accept that they cannot control everything. The song expresses a bittersweet mixture of love and sadness, of hope and resignation.

Overall, "If I Could" is a stirring and emotionally resonant song that speaks to anyone who has ever loved a child. It captures the depth and complexity of parental love, and the recognition that ultimately, we cannot always protect those we love from the world.

My favorite song from Carl. I believed every word because I knew how he loved his Son.

Carlton Russell

Had the pleasure of meeting him when he recorded "From where I stand" for the Billy Barty Foundation. My wife and I would always see him perform at "At My Place", a jazz club in Santa Monica. Truly one of the best voices of our time.

I met Carl at At My Place, thru Venice, the band. This was when Veronica was his girlfriend. Around 1992. I interviewed him for a Black Music class I had in College. He was the nicest person. He mentioned he was involved in a 20 year anniversary tour of JCS and eventually introduced me to Ted in 1993. My heart is still 💔 to this day.

Yes! I remember that unique and great vibe of At My Place in Santa Monica where Carl Anderson performed. I was there night after night when he sang those soulful songs which still inspire me to carry on my vocalizing talent today. Much love. YM

@Yvette McPhee Did you ever go to see Venice in the early 90s? Remember the changed the name to American Pie? Kipp from Venice used to say "Welcome to At My American Pie Place". Too funny. I did love the vibe there too.
