Blue Suede Shoes
Carl Perkins & Johnny Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it's one for the money, two for the show
Three to get ready now go cat go
But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

You can knock me down, step on my face
Slander my name all over the place
Do anything that you want to do
But uh, uh honey lay off of my shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

You can burn my house, you can steal my car
Drink my liquor from an old fruit jar
Do anything that you want to do
But uh, uh honey lay off of my shoes
But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes
Well you can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

Well it's one for the money, two for the show
Three to get ready, now go cat go
But don't you, step on my blue suede shoes
You can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

Well it's blue, blue, blue suede shoes
Blue, blue, blue suede shoes yeh!
Well blue, blue, blue suede shoes

Blue, blue, blue suede shoes
Well you can do anything but lay off of my blue suede shoes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Carl Perkins & Johnny Cash's song Blue suede shoes are talking about the relationship between the singer and their blue suede shoes. It is as if the shoes have a mind of their own and are like an extension of the singer. The song begins with a catchy introduction of "one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go cat go". The blue suede shoes are presented as a symbol of the singer's cool and confident persona. The singer makes it clear that they don't want anyone to tamper with their shoes, no matter what they do to them - "You can knock me down, step on my face, slander my name all over the place, do anything that you want to do, but honey lay off of my shoes". The message is that people can mess with the persona, but the shoes are off limits.

The song can be interpreted as a representation of the singer's identity, with the blue suede shoes as an extension of their character. The shoes are a tangible item that can be seen as protective armor, allowing the singer to be whoever they want to be. The lyrics carry a humorous tone, emphasizing the absurdity of protecting a pair of shoes like they are part of the family. In conclusion, Blue Suede Shoes is a classic rock and roll song that captures the essence of the genre with its catchy tune, entertaining lyrics, and upbeat rhythm.

Never understood why Elvis Presley became a living God and Carl Perkins remains nearly unknown by most people. Carl Perkins was probably the best Rock& n' Roll star who ever lived !!!!
