At the age of 17, she recorded a duet with her father Rufus Thomas, "Because I Love You", which became a Southern hit and gave the Satellite label (later Stax Records) its first real success.
In 1961 she rose to national prominence with "Gee Whiz (Look in His Eyes)", which reached the Top Ten in both the R&B and Pop categories, becoming the first Memphis soul record to have an impact nationwide and ensuring the success of the Stax Records label.
In the next ten years, she had 22 singles on the national charts, including "I'll Bring It on Home to You" (an answer to Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me"), "Let Me Be Good to You", and Isaac Hayes' "B-A-B-Y".
She is well-known for her duets with Otis Redding, from the album King & Queen, including the recordings of the Lowell Fulson composition "Tramp" and the Steve Cropper/Eddie Floyd song "Knock on Wood".
In 1993 Carla Thomas received a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
Something Good

Yes, it is, honey
Something good's gonna happen to you
Well alright now
I lost all faith in man
But you took by my hand
Said that I looked just for you
You're really true now
Something (something)
Good's gonna happen to you
Yes, it is now
Something (something)
Good's gonna happen to you
Well, all right
I didn't give in fast
That kind of love never lasts
Then at night, you had no rest
Makes me know that you
Passed the test now
Something (something)
Oh, good's gonna happen to you
Oh, oh, oh, yeah
I'm gonna love you right
Morning, noon and night
Love you when you call
'Cause you deserve it all
Oh, that's why
Something (something)
Oh, good's gonna happen to you
Yes, it is
Something (something)
Good's gonna happen to you
I'm gonna make it
Oh, oh, oh, yeah, ooh
Something good's gonna happen to you
Something good's gonna happen to you
I'm gonna make it happen
I got to make it happen
So sweet, you're so nice
Something good's gonna happen to you
The lyrics of Carla Thomas's "Something Good" paint a picture of hope and optimism. The song starts with the declaration "Something good's gonna happen to you," as Thomas reassures someone in her life that good things are coming their way. It's clear that the listener has been through some tough times - Thomas sings about losing faith in humanity - but a new relationship has given them reason to believe in the future again. Thomas sings that "you took by my hand" and "we're gonna prove that you're really true now."
The second verse delves deeper into the listener's background. They've been hurt before, and so they're slow to trust in new relationships. It's only when they experience a restless night - presumably due to their strong feelings for Thomas - that they begin to open up. By the end of the song, Thomas is imploring the listener to trust her and her love fully, as she repeats the refrain that "something good's gonna happen to you."
Overall, "Something Good" is a hopeful anthem about the power of love to heal even the deepest wounds. The song suggests that faith in oneself, in others, and in the future can be revitalized through a supportive partnership.
