What I love about this piece is that although sound "weird", its development still have classical structure, especially the climax and the fade out at the end.

What I find really remarkable and intereseting about this is that I can actually remember some phrases of the piece, some favorite moments, some peculiar and endearing moments, as if it were more conventional music or music I'm more familiar with. This redefines what's music. It creates new aesthetics.

The piece was originally quadraphonic with speakers in front and back of you along as well as the sides. The shaded area represents the channel the sound was coming from. It does really work well for the stereo mix.

Ligeti created this at an electronic studio using taped snippets. He sorted them (some REAL tiny) into groups, then used semantic rules to determine what happened when. The result is that one gets the impression of speech, as the people who referred to Artoo Detoo have said.

If you can find the score by Wehinger (my university library had it) then you can see some of Ligeti's notes and Wehinger explains how he chose to depict different sounds and so forth. Well worth looking at!

I've heard a lot about ARTIKULATION, but never heard it until now. The classic early electronic music sound -- blips, bloops and whooshes, organized through painstaking tape splices -- and a wonderfully designed visual analogue to accompany it. Excellent! Thanks for putting it here!

The visual score is fun and a great tool to gain access to this music (thanks for creating this video!), but I've long had a nagging feeling that it is also somehow restrictive - it tells the listener what to focus on. Today I ran into this quote in an article by Luke Windsor: "The now famous aural score of Artikulation (Ligeti and Wehinger, 1970) can be seen as an attempt to delimit the potential interpretations of Ligeti’s electronic piece. In more specific terms, the score reifies the composer’s intentions and the means by which the sounds were created at the expense of the listener’s imagination." I have to say I agree.

Rainer Wehinger was teacher at the HdK Berlin when I came to Berlin in the early 80's. One of the lectures I enjoyed was a profound overview of electronic music and analogue synthesizers of the time.

I think compositions like this were way ahead of their time, only now can newer generations enjoy them for the playfulness and sonic beauty, possibly precisely because the novelty effect of hearing subtractive synthesis has worn off.

Have only recently become aware of Ligeti but hearing this I'm almost certain that Squarepusher has drawn heaps of inspiration from this piece. This is very reminiscent of some of the less rhythmical/drum n' bass-y stuff he's doing on Music is Rotted One Note, Go Plastic, and Do You Know Squarepusher.

Awww yeah, so good. I had to pic an electronic piece to write an analysis of for one of my classes, so (being a HUGE Ligeti fan) I picked this. And thanks to this listening score, I finished a first draft of the analysis in just over an hour!!

I love how my traditional "music reading eye" relates to this untraditional score and the untraditional audio. It's a score to follow a musical piece, but some might say they aren't either of those things. You know, the stodgy traditionalists amongst us. It feels like the visual and aural equivalent of eating meatloaf and mashed potatoes that have been made to look like chocolate cake and ice cream. I saw that once on a cooking show that featured Doogie Howser...can't remember the name.

The thing is that these are not random sounds. They are purely based on articulation. I believe Ligeti was exploring the different range of articulation on something as completely unemotionally attached an electronic tape. This piece was composed during a time of scientific revolution so you have to understand where Ligeti is coming from.

I think it's very beautiful. And where do you hear "random noises"? The sounds are highly structured. Maybe it's the lack of loop based figures/repetitions that you miss?!

Very very cool! I love how "brown blob" means "reverb". I guess with a little effort you could train yourself to read the shapes. You could look at the diagram and hear strange music in your head. How cool would that be?? I have dabbled in making electronic music for almost 10 years now but ironically I'm only getting into Steve Reich etc etc now.

The score is awesome, looks almost like spectrogram - hard work! @Furiens - I don't find dated equipment as a problem. As an electronic musician, I've found the possibilities of the modern gear more problematic. Back then we had limits we could push, now we have gear pushing us, if we're not strict in what we do. Jean-Michel Jarre has used very primitive lead synths, and it has been a good way to go. Listen to preset sounds of workstations: they sound sweet alone, but can you really use them?

theres nothing random about this piece considering its sequenced. i think at one point in time most forms of art were exploring the potential of 'cut-up' or 'jumpcuts' in art. also within the realm of 'serialized' 20th century music, they were exploring 'total serialization' which also included manipulations of timbre, spacial relationships, etc

I think evolution is a fairly clear set of intentions, even in the absence of a clear agent to ascribe those intentions to. About the potential randomness of this piece, Ligeti has a pretty good track record. It's fairly clear that he was doing something which required a strong set of skills, even if you don't think much of this specific piece. It's also noteworthy that this was made in the 1950s, when there was a certain novelty and improbability to working in an electronic medium at all.

As far as I know it is simply an 'artist's impression' rather than being concretely derived from the sound signal, but I could be wrong. It is very accurate though, as you can see. Once in a lecture I was appointed as page turner while the class listened. The lecturer was applying for a position at the school and so ALL the music dept bigwigs were there. I had never heard the piece before and was sweating bullets. I made it through, a testiment to the accuracy of the score.
