Musicalmente empezó a tocar en un grupo llamado Crápulas Flor, pero acabó siendo cantautor, adoptando su apellido artístico de la ciudad marroquí Chef-Chaouen (Chauen). A mediados de los 90 empezó a recorrer varias salas madrileñas, a menudo junto a Quique González y así acabó colaborando en el disco recopilatorio Cantautores: la nueva generación en 1997. Un año después graba su primer disco.
Su estilo musical ha sido denominado como "fusión de autor" pues como el mismo Carlos reconoce, sus influencias son muy variadas y van desde Joaquín Sabina hasta Silvio Rodríguez.
