Building My Empire
Carlos St. John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I’m Building My Wealth with Jesus

CHORUS       I once thought that getting rich was the way to go.
So I worked on getting more in any way.
Then I found that the real road to riches
Is building my wealth with Jesus every day.

VERSE           I found that a life of greed was a losing game.
I lost a lot of friends; said I was power mad and vain.
I suffered from despair when my wife walked out on me.
I piled up lots of money, but my life was misery.

CHORUS

VERSE           It seems like the more I made, the less I had.
I was never happy; I always felt sad.
I looked on each relationships as another deal.
“What’s in it for me?” was all I felt was real.

BRIDGE         But at last, I saw what was really true.
I had built high walls all around me.
I prayed to Jesus to break down the walls.
And praise the Lord, Jesus set me free.

CHORUS       I once thought that getting rich was the way to go.
So I worked on getting more in any way.
Then I found that the real road to riches

Is building my wealth with Jesus every day.
 chorus

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Carlos St. John's song "Building My Empire" tell a story of personal transformation and discovery. In the chorus, the singer reflects on their past mindset, believing that becoming rich was the ultimate goal. They spent their time and energy pursuing wealth in various ways. However, they later realize that true riches lie in building their spiritual wealth with Jesus every day.

In the first verse, the singer acknowledges the negative consequences of their previous obsession with greed. They lost friends and experienced loneliness as their focus on power and material possessions consumed their life. The moment their wife left them became a breaking point, as they realized that despite their wealth, their life was in turmoil and filled with misery.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on the emptiness they felt despite accumulating more wealth. Happiness eluded them, and they viewed relationships as transactional rather than based on genuine connection. Their selfishness and "what's in it for me?" mindset overshadowed the importance of authentic human connections.

However, in the bridge of the song, the singer experiences a breakthrough. They recognize that they had built walls around themselves, isolating them from others and from a deeper spiritual connection. In an act of surrender and faith, they pray to Jesus to break down those walls. The result is a sense of liberation and freedom.

Overall, the lyrics of "Building My Empire" encourage a shift in mindset from the pursuit of material wealth to nurturing spiritual wealth through a relationship with Jesus. It serves as a reminder that true fulfillment and riches come from within and not from external possessions.
