She began her first steps as an amateur singer at age 15, on several radio stations in Lima, but professionally at age 18.
Doña Julia and Don Víctor met in 1948, in Miraflores, when she was looking for a piano teacher. Since then, he stayed with her.
Víctor Lara was the one who came to baptize her with the pseudonym Carmencita Lara. At the moment that she had to register in a dependency of the state, Julia wanted to do it with the pseudonym of July García. The official replied that they did not register foreign artists there, implying that she did not like the name. Victor told Julia: - "Put Carmencita just like my mom and we complete with Lara".
Together with her husband, she went through all the radio stations looking for an opportunity, until the first contract arrived. The contract was made with Radio Excelsior, on 2 June 1955. The owner of the radio station had listened to her in a restaurant located next to the Plaza de Armas where she went to sing. Her first recording was Olvídala amigo, composition of the iqueño Luis R. Cueto, and of whom don Víctor was the one of the idea to record it. For this they used an accordion, cajón and double bass accompaniment instruments. This at the beginning of the 60s in a studio by the guitarist, Óscar Avilés.
From there they came, Llora, llora corazón, Indio by Alicia Maguiña, singer-songwriter and researcher, who has always highlighted the value of Carmencita for the popular culture. Other tracks she recorded: Clavel Marchito by Armando Gonzáles, Milagro by Augusto Rojas Llerena and El Árbol de mi casa by Salvador Oda.
The couple of artists made a series of contributions to Peruvian music. She ended the stigma that the criollos do not sing huaynos. She was an innovator of the Peruvian waltz, not only in her way of interpreting it but also in the instrumental accompaniment she had. Don Víctor Lara, contributed incorporating for the first time the sound of the accordion and the battery in the Peruvian waltz. In addition, she devised the successful formula of fusing the female voice with the harp. She used ¡Llora cholo, llora y sufre! as the lema in the beginnings of the concerts.
Throughout her artistic life, Carmencita Lara popularized waltzes that sing to the lack of love, sadness and hope. Carmencita Lara has not only traveled to all corners of Peru, but also to several cities in Europe and Latin America, in which she convened collective catharsis in her recitals.
Julia Rosa Capristán García (Trujillo, Perú; 4 de octubre de 1926), conocida artísticamente como Carmencita Lara es una cantante peruana de valses, huaynos, marineras, polcas y pasillos. Es considerada por muchos peruanos referente de la música perfecta para "ahogar las penas". Reconocida por el tono agudo de su voz, modo particular de interpretación y por el infaltable acompañamiento del sonido del acordeón del maestro, don Víctor Lara.
Empezó sus primeros pasos como cantante aficionada a los 15 años en varias radios de Lima, pero profesionalmente a los 18.
Doña Julia y don Víctor se conocieron en 1948, en Miraflores, cuando ella buscaba un profesor de piano. Desde entonces, se quedó junto a ella.
A don Víctor fue a quien se le ocurrió bautizarla con el seudónimo de Carmencita Lara. Al momento que ella debía inscribirse en una dependencia del estado, Julia quiso hacerlo con el seudónimo de July García. El funcionario le respondió que allí no inscribían a artistas extranjeros, dando a entender que no le gustaba el nombre. Víctor, le dijo a Julia: – "Ponte Carmencita Lara igual que mi mamá". Así quedó.
Al lado de Víctor, su esposo, recorrió todas las emisoras radiales en busca de una oportunidad, hasta que el primer contrato llegó. El contrato lo realizó con Radio Excelsior el 2 de junio de 1955. El dueño de la radioemisora la había escuchado en un restaurante ubicado junto a la Plaza de Armas donde ella fue a cantar.
Su primera grabación fue "Olvídala amigo", composición del iqueño Luis R. Cueto, y de quien don Víctor fue el de la idea de grabarla. Para ello utilizaron como instrumentos de acompañamiento acordeón, cajón y contrabajo. Esto a inicios de la década del 60 en un estudio a cargo del guitarrista, don Óscar Avilés .
De allí vinieron, "Llora, llora corazón", entre otros éxitos. Se destaca la gran labor de don Víctor que quizá si no hubiese estado al lado de Carmencita Lara, posiblemente aquella voz quejumbrosa que conocemos se hubiese perdido por algún lado. Él es quien planificaba todo en la exitosa carrera de Carmencita, quien señalaba el camino correcto para alcanzar el prestigio.
La pareja de artistas hizo una serie de aportes a la música peruana. Ella acabó con el estigma de que los criollos no cantan huaynos. Fue una innovadora del vals peruano, no sólo en su forma de interpretarlo sino también en el acompañamiento instrumental con el que contaba. Don Víctor Lara, contribuyó incorporando por primera vez el sonido del acordeón y la batería en el vals peruano. Además, ideó la fórmula exitosa de fusionar la voz femenina con el arpa.
Durante toda su vida artística, Carmencita Lara popularizó valses que le cantan al desamor, la tristeza y la esperanza. Su voz quejumbrosa es como el pañuelo que alivia las penas y la nostalgia. “Llora cholo, llora. ¡Y sufre!” Así fue desde sus inicios, así lo es hasta hoy. Carmencita Lara no sólo ha viajado por todos los rincones del Perú, sino también por varias ciudades de Europa y América Latina, en las que convocó las catarsis colectivas en sus recitales.
En Ecuador, hasta hoy las radios programan sus canciones.
