It's Never Too Late
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
(No, no, no, no)

It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
Oh, no, no, no, no, no

It's too late, baby

It's too late now, darling
It's too late

Overall Meaning

Carole King's song, "It's Never Too Late," is about the possibility of finding love at any age. The first stanza illustrates how the singer used to feel left out and alone, watching other couples pass her by. However, she now feels like a part of them because she has found a man of her own. The second verse talks about how the singer found comfort in her partner's arms when she was feeling down, and how they fell in love. The chorus reassures the listener that it's never too late to love again, no matter how much pain or heartache they might have experienced in the past. The song ends with the singer expressing her love and appreciation for her partner.

The lyrics of "It's Never Too Late" are relevant to anyone who has ever felt like they might never find love again. The message is clear: no matter how old you are or what you've been through, there is always hope for a new beginning. The song is a reminder that love can come when you least expect it and that it's never too late to start over.

Right there with you.

I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album.

I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly.

Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it.

Still love this album, and Bookends, and SO MANY MORE!!!

I'm a 47 year old construction worker and I heard this song for the first time two years ago and I cried. I was alone in my truck, driving to work, so I had time to dry my eyes by the time I got there and told everyone that I was doing great, even though this song tore into my emotions!

Beautiful, love what you wrote , & publicizing it - takes some guts. ❤️ I haven't been able to get this song out of my head this past wk, (my not so subconscious at work, no dout), so just listened to it here for 1st time in 20+ yrs. I can't think of a song w/a higher emotional impact that nails the sorrow & loss of falling out of love more poignantly.
