The Island
Caroline Lavelle Lyrics

And look for footprints of yours in the foam
I can wait til the sea gives up her lovers
'til I find you asleep on a stone
I'll wait
Where are you?
I'll wait
now the summer is over
Light is dying
Earth is giving up life with a sigh
Then the grass was so green where we were lying
Cracking underfoot now, tinder dry
I'll wait
Where are you?
The song "The Island" by Caroline Lavelle is a deep and melancholic piece that taps into the feelings of loss and longing. In the first verse, Lavelle expresses her desire to find traces of her loved one on an island. She speaks of waiting for the sea to give her lover up to her, even if it means finding them asleep on a stone. The repetition of "I'll wait" shows her determination to find her loved one, no matter how long it takes. She's lost and needs to find her way, and the island holds the answers she seeks.
The second verse sees Lavelle reminiscing about a time when things were much different. The light is dying, the earth is giving up life, and the grass that was once green is now tinder-dry. It's a time of change, and Lavelle's thoughts are consumed with the past, with what once was. She longs for the times when she was with her lover in a happy place, and the current state of things only adds to her anguish. Despite the sadness that engulfs her, she remains persistent in her search for her lover, and this is evident in the repetition of "Where are you?"
Overall, "The Island" is a song about searching for lost love, about the pain of being without someone you cherish. Lavelle does an excellent job of expressing her feelings through the lyrics, and the melody only adds to the melancholic mood of the piece.

Tomorrow night I will go down to the island
I plan to head to the island tomorrow night
And look for footprints of yours in the foam
I'll search for your footprints in the foamy sand
I can wait til the sea gives up her lovers
I am patient enough to wait until the sea brings you back
'til I find you asleep on a stone
I'll keep searching until I find you sleeping on a rock
I'll wait
I won't give up hope
Where are you?
I wonder where you are
now the summer is over
The season has changed from summer
Light is dying
The light is fading away
Earth is giving up life with a sigh
Nature is letting go of life with a saddened sound
Then the grass was so green where we were lying
The grass used to be lush green where we rested
Cracking underfoot now, tinder dry
Now it's brittle and parched, and breaks underfoot

My favourite track from the album. William Orbit's unique sonic style and production nous, make for a truly heavenly song. To listen to this is like waking up in a beautiful dream; to be transported to a realm of perfection, where love and music walk hand in hand... Perhaps it's real, perhaps we'll meet each other There!
