When the sun goes down
In the evening, baby
When the sun goes down
Well, ain't it lonesome
Ain't it lonesome, babe
When your love is not around?
When the sun goes down
Last night, I laid a-sleeping
I was thinking to myself
Last night, I laid a-sleeping
I was thinking to myself
Well, what I been thinking
Is why that the one that you love
Will mistreat you for someone else?
When the sun goes down
The sun rises in the east
An it sets up in the west
The sun rises in the east, mama
An it set's in the west
Well, it's hard to tell, hard to tell
Which one will treat you the best
When the sun goes down
'Yea-ah'
'Ooo-ee, hoo-wee'
'Yea-ah'
'Hee, hoo-oh'
'Yea-hi'
'Hoo, hoo-eee'
Good-bye old sweetheart and pals
Yes, I'm going away
But I may be back to see you again
Some old rainy day
Well, in the evening, in the evening
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down.

Carr’s song, “When the Sun Goes Down,” is about the loneliness one experiences when separated from their lover. The lyrics speak to the yearning and longing that is felt when one’s love is not around during the night, as depicted in the opening lines of the song. The repetition of the phrase “when the sun goes down” throughout the song highlights the idea that it is in the darkness of night that this loneliness is felt the most. Carr poignantly captures the painful feelings of love lost and heartbreak in her song, as illustrated in her lyrics, “what I been thinking is why that the one that you love, will mistreat you for someone else.”
The lyrics also touch on the theme of uncertainty, questioning which lover will treat one the best. The lines, “it's hard to tell, hard to tell, which one will treat you the best, when the sun goes down” echo the feeling of being stuck in a difficult situation, unsure of what to do. Despite the sadness in the song, there is an underlying hope, expressed in the last stanza, where Carr bids farewell to her old sweetheart and pals, promising to return on a rainy day.
Overall, Carr’s song, “When the Sun Goes Down” is a poignant portrayal of heartbreak and the longing for love, set to a haunting melody that captures the emotions it expresses.
