Molly
Carrie Lyrics

I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown,
Picking up an oar, when the ship went down.
When she made it home, Molly kissed the ground,
I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown.
Pull and rest, pull and rest.
Do your best, not more or less.
Rest and pull, pull and try.
Keep asking why
Til we all meet on the other side.
I'm gonna row my boat like Rosa Parks
On that downtown bus, trying to embark
Didn't know if she would see the mountain top
When asked stand, Rosa did not.
Pull and rest, pull and rest.
Do your best, not more or less.
Rest and pull, pull and try.
Keep asking why
Til we all meet on the other side.
I'm gonna row my boat like RBG,
Saying, all y'all, take your boot off me.
She worked to change the old paradigm.
Day by day, one law at a time.
Pull and rest, pull and rest.
Do your best, not more or less.
Rest and pull, pull and try.
Keep asking why
Til we all meet on the other side.
I'm gonna row my boat like Lucretia Mott,
Who stood up and said, this has to stop.
Believed we all carry a piece of light,
Some called her wrong, but she was right.
Pull and rest, pull and rest.
Do your best, not more or less.
Rest and pull, pull and try.
Keep asking why
Til we all meet on the other side.
I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown,
Picking up an oar, when the ship went down. When she made it home, Molly kissed the ground,
I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown.

I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown.
I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown.

Overall Meaning

The song Molly by Carrie Newcomer is about the courage of four different women throughout history and their struggles for justice and equality. Each verse celebrates a different woman's bravery and determination in the face of adversity. Molly Brown, the first woman mentioned in the song, was a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic. She famously helped row her lifeboat to safety and later became an advocate for women’s suffrage, workers' rights, and education. The second woman mentioned is Rosa Parks, who stood up for her rights and refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott and becoming a symbol of the civil rights movement. The third woman is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a pioneering jurist and advocate for women’s rights, who fought tirelessly to change the legal system's attitude towards gender equality. Finally, Lucretia Mott is another early feminist who fought for women's rights through her activism in the abolition and women's suffrage movements.

The repetitive chorus of "pull and rest, pull and rest, do your best, not more or less" reinforces the idea that perseverance and commitment are crucial to making change happen. The last line of every verse, "I'm gonna row my boat like Molly Brown," ties the verses together and emphasizes the persistent determination of these women and the need for us all to follow their example.

I loved listening to this on the way to school on my discman - the B-side to this used to freak me out though! Cracking song - a real hidden gem of its time that I probably would never have heard were it not for good old MTV Europe.

Steve Ludwin

Thanks! I can't remember the B-side but it was a pretty funny song to get A listed on Radio one!

Aydogan RM

+Steve Ludwin love how this was playlisted especially with the lyrical content! Haha!

Geoffrey Walsh

Pillow Talk With Cousin Lucifer was the B-Side. It's odd, pitchshifted with a hook of "I'm well endowed/I'm well endowed". At least I know of one other person who bought the CD single of this.

Finally found this song again - been searching for ages. Can't believe it got daytime radio play with those lyrics - def Virgin Radio (in their months best new music slot) and Radio 1 according to forum posts trying to find it. Remember hearing it in a Mcdonalds once that had Virgin on lol.

Scott Stewart

great pity these guys only lasted for the one album

Aydogan RM

Is there a demo of Warmer than fire? Easily the best song Ash released and they didn't even write it!

MightyFil
