Fallin'
Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breaking her heart

Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

Now all the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts

Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Now I'm free fallin' now I'm free fallin'.

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while

Now I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Yeah, I'm free, free fallin'. Blow!

Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Now I'm free)
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'

Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
(Now I'm free)
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'

(Free fallin')
Now I'm free fallin', now I'm free fallin'

Overall Meaning

Tom Petty's classic song "Free Fallin'" tells the story of a rebellious youth who is free from a relationship and society's expectations. The song starts with a description of a good girl who loves her family, religion, and even Elvis Presley. The singer, however, is a bad boy who does not care about the girl anymore, and he feels free from the relationship. He compares his freedom to "free fallin'" and embraces the feeling of liberation, with repetition in the chorus of "now I'm free, free fallin'."

The song then shifts to a description of a valley where vampires and bad boys roam, and good girls are left with broken hearts. Even though the singer is free, he feels empathy for the good girls who were affected by his actions. The last verse reveals the singer's aspiration to glide over Mulholland Drive, a famous winding road in Los Angeles, and write the girl's name in the sky. He wants to be completely free by free-falling into nothingness and leaving the world temporarily.

The song is widely interpreted as a metaphor for the uncertainties and fears of growing up, but also serves as an anthem of freedom and liberation. It encapsulates the feeling of wanting to break away from society's limitations and live life on your terms, even if it means breaking a few hearts along the way.

LYRICS! ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼

I've been wasting my time just runnin' around
You've been waiting for me on the solid ground
What do I have left to give to you
My mind says no, but my heart says I love you... too

[CHORUS]
But I don't wanna fall if it's not worth fallin'
What's the point at all, if my heart's not callin'?
I don't don't wanna fall if it's not worth fallin'
What's the point at all, if my heart is not callin'?

for you, for you, for yooou...

Same old story, get to know me
Put me closely, be my only
Let's not rush into something
Got to know when the love ends
And all this time I try to invest in you
But I think we both need the best for me and you
And time keeps pickin' it up, now
And love keeps slowing down, now

[CHORUS]
But I don't wanna fall if it's not worth fallin'
What's the point at all, if my heart is not callin'?
I don't don't wanna fall if it's not worth fallin'
What's the point at all, if my heart is not callin'?

for you, for you, for yooou...

Correct me if there's something wrong! :)
