Dal 1987 ad oggi i Casino Royale hanno suonato di tutto e visto di tutto. Partiti come band fortemente influenzata dagli Specials e dai Clash sono rapidamente divenuti un fenomeno capace di raccogliere un pubblico trasversale. I primi due dischi, Soul of Ska e Jungle Jubilee, suonati in levare e con una sezione fiati di primissimo piano, rimangono tuttora opere prime per la musica italiana, dischi con una formula sonora ancora oggi riproposta da moltissimi gruppi.
I primi anni novanta vedono alcuni cambiamenti e sviluppi radicali nel suono della band. Si comincia a cantare in italiano e le liriche assumono di conseguenza una rilevanza fondamentale, alla pari del suono. Dainamaita, primo album registrato per una major, è un’esplosione di suoni molto differenti tra loro: black rock, reggae, hip hop, dub, funk. L’album spiazza e sorprende tutti, e diventa allo stesso tempo una pietra miliare per il nuovo suono alternativo italiano, un’opera che merita sicuramente la definizione di cross over.
Nel 1994 comincia la lavorazione di Sempre Più Vicini, per la cui produzione viene coinvolto Ben Young, artigiano del suono della scuola di Bristol, che indirizza la band verso sonorità più profonde ed introspettive. Le radio cominciano a suonare parecchio alcuni dei singoli presenti sull’album, e la sensazione comune è quella che il gruppo sia ormai ad una svolta decisiva.
Alla fine del 1995 i Casino Royale si trasferiscono a Londra, più precisamente nel quartiere periferico di Leytostone, ed é lì che cominciano a comporre brani per un nuovo album che coincida con il decennale della band. Viene ingaggiato in qualità di sound engineer e coproduttore Tim Holmes, già produttore dei Primal Screem e successivamente componente dei Death in Vegas. Il risultato é un disco fatto da parti melodiche, un suono solido e potente, il groove tipico dell’hip hop e sperimentazioni influenzate dalla drum’n’bass. Per ironia della sorte CRX, questo il titolo dell’album, viene definito da alcuni discografici “il miglior disco del 2006!”. Scelti dagli U2 per aprire i due concerti italiani del Pop Mart Tour, i Casino Royale finiscono in realtà col vendere poco meno di cinquantamila copie di CRX. Le reciproche aspettative tra band e label vengono disattese e i Casino Royale chiedono la scissione del contratto.
Nel periodo di assenza dal mercato la band apre una propria etichetta dal nome “Royality” e sviluppa un progetto parallelo, Royalize, legato a sonorità elettroniche di matrice black. Giuliano Palma, interprete vocale di molti dei brani, sceglie la strada solista e il progetto Casino Royale si ferma per un lungo periodo, anche se per il pubblico affezionato i Casino Royale continuano, comunque, ad esistere.
Nel 2002 il gruppo si ricompatta e sposta la sua attenzione sul web, con la pubblicazione di una serie di brani scaricabili liberamente dalla rete, diventati successivamente spunto per una serie di pubblicazioni di materiale video e musicale.
Nel 2004 tornano a suonare dal vivo, proponendosi tra la primavera e l’estate con una quindicina di date in tutta Italia. L’affetto e l’interesse dimostrati dal pubblico in questa occasione sono la spinta che convince definitivamente i Casino Royale a cominciare a lavorare a dei nuovi brani. Decisi a comporre un numero di canzoni sufficiente a pubblicare un nuovo album, la band ritorna nel suo studio a suonare. La voglia di tornare a fare solo ed esclusivamente i musicisti è tanta che i Casino Royale decidono di prendere contatti con una nuova etichetta. La scelta ricade proprio sulla V2 Records, mentre come produttore viene contattato lo scozzese Howard Bernstein, meglio noto come Howie B.
Venti giorni di studio a Milano e quindici di mixaggio a Londra: così prende definitivamente forma “Reale”, il nuovo, attesissimo album dei Casino Royale.
