Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Find Him
Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where is he? Dying slow
But I bet I can find him
Through the clouds that fill his mind
I can find him in the darkest part of the night
Through all this enslavement
Damnation, destruction
Dysfunction, decimation
Well, I told Jewel, girl, settle down
When it′s clear
Joe comes back 'round
And he will find us
Mourning prays for light
He will find us when the moon drinks up the night
Through music and madness
Salvation, passion
Sweet celebration
When he finds us
Loving was so easy when instinctively we knew
Now everything has changed
Stumbling through the pain of something
Powerful and new
Without a clue
Joe told me, prepare a space
Full of love and God′s sweet grace
And he will find me
When the devil's deems unworthy
He will find me
Even broken down and blind
The choices are simple, livin' them at ease
The fearful will tremble
Just keep on believin′
He will find him
He will find him
Yes, you will find him
Find him
Find him
The song "Find Him" by Cassandra Wilson speaks of a search for a man named Joe who is dying slowly - Jewel asks the singer to go find him. The lyrics are metaphoric, and the search for Joe represents a search for hope and the ability to find light in the darkness. The singer asserts that despite the difficulties and hardships that are present - such as enslavement, damnation, and destruction - she can still find Joe in the darkest parts of the night.
The lyrics express a sense of struggle and resilience, with the idea that loving someone was so much easier before things changed. However, the singer believes that they will find Joe again and that everything will fall into place. They speak of preparation, salvation, passion, and sweet celebration that will come when Joe is found. The tone of the lyrics is ultimately hopeful, with the assertion that even when something is broken down and blind, they can still find Joe - or in metaphorical terms, hope and light.
