Wilson's repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her contralto voice has been described as bluesy and sultry, and the style of her music ranges from swing to funk to bossa nova. Many of the songs she covers are by artists who usually record in other genres.
Wilson counts the late Miles Davis as one of her greatest influences. In 1989 she performed as the opening act for Davis at the JVC Jazz Festival in Chicago. In 1999 she produced Traveling Miles as a tribute to Davis. The album developed from a series of jazz concerts that she performed at Lincoln Center in November 1997 in Davis's honor and includes three selections based on Davis's own compositions, in which Wilson adapted the original themes.

Cassandra Wilson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sinner, come out to call me
Sinner, come out to call me
Run to the road
Run to the road
Run to the road
Your time draws nigh
It′s a sign of the judgement
It's a sign of the judgement
Ooh, it′s a sign of the judgement
It's a sign of the judgement
It's a sign of the judgement
Sign of the judgement
It′s a sign of the judgement
It′s a sign of the judgement
It's a sign of the judgement
No hiding place
No hiding place
There′s no hiding place
Two tall angels
Two tall angels
Two tall angels
On a chariot wheel
Oh, on a chariot wheel
Mmm, on a chariot wheel
Dark clouds rising
Dark clouds rising
Dark clouds are rising
It's a sign of the judgement
It′s a sign of the judgement
Yes, it's a sign of the judgement
It′s a sign of the judgement
It's a sign of the judgement
It's a sign
It′s a sign
Sign of the judgement
It′s a sign of the judgement
The lyrics to Cassandra Wilson's song "Sign of the Judgment" convey a sense of impending doom and a call to repentance. The repeated lines, "Come out, sinner / Sinner, come out to call me" suggest a plea for sinners to confront their actions and face the consequences. The lyrics speak of running to the road, as if urging sinners to seek redemption before it is too late. The phrase "Your time draws nigh" further emphasizes the urgency of the situation.
The repetition of "It's a sign of the judgement" reinforces the idea that the events described in the song are not mere happenstance, but rather signs of divine judgement. The mention of "no hiding place" suggests that there is no escaping accountability for one's actions.
The mention of "two tall angels on a chariot wheel" suggests the presence of celestial beings who are witnesses to the impending judgement. The image of "dark clouds rising" adds to the foreboding atmosphere, symbolizing the approaching doom.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sign of the Judgment" convey a message of warning and the need for spiritual introspection before facing the consequences of one's actions.
