Epilogue
Cast - Frozen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone I wait in the shadows
I count the hours 'til I can sleep
I dreamed a dream Cosette stood by
It made her weep to know I die
Alone at the end of the day
Upon this wedding night I pray
Take these children, my Lord, to thy embrace
And show them grace

God on high
Hear my prayer
Take me now
To thy care
Where You are
Let me be
Take me now
Take me there
Bring me home
Bring me home

M'sieur, I bless your name
M'sieur, lay down your burden
You raised my child in love
And you will be with god

I am ready, Fantine
At the end of my days
She's the best of my life

Papa, Papa, I do not understand!
Are you alright? They said you'd gone away

Cosette, my child, am I forgiven now?
Thank God, thank God, I've lived to see this day

It's you who must forgive a thoughtless fool
It's you who must forgive a thankless man
It's thanks to you that I am living
And again I lay down my life at your feet

Cosette, your father is a saint
When they wounded me
He took me from the barricade
Carried like a babe
And brought me home to you!

Now you are here
Again beside me
Now I can die in peace
For now my life is blessed

You will live, Papa, you're going to live
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye!

Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die
I'll obey,
I will try
On this page
I write my last confession
Read it well
When I at last am sleeping
It's the story
Of those who always loved you
Your mother gave her life for you
Then gave you to my keeping

Come with me
Where chains will never bind you
All your grief
At last, at last behind you
Lord in Heaven,
Look down on him in mercy

Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory

Take my hand
And lead me to salvation
Take my love,
For love is everlasting

And remember
The truth that once was spoken

To love another person
Is to see the face of God!

Overall Meaning

The song "Epilogue" from the musical "Les Misérables" is a poignant and emotional conclusion to the story. It begins with Jean Valjean, who is now facing his last moments, reflecting on his life and waiting alone in the shadows. Valjean recounts dreaming of Cosette, his adopted daughter, standing by his side, which moved her to tears knowing that he is dying. On his wedding night with Cosette, he prays to God to take care of his children and show them grace.

Then, Valjean addresses God directly, asking him to hear his prayer and take him to his care. He yearns to be where God is, for that is where he wants to be. He longs to go home, to be at peace.

In the following verses, Fantine, Cosette, and Valjean's love interest, appears and they express their gratitude for Valjean's love and care. Fantine blesses Valjean's name and acknowledges that he raised her child with love, assuring him that he will be with God. Valjean, in response, is ready to leave this world, content that he has had the best of his life with Cosette.

Cosette, concerned, questions her father's well-being, as she was told that he had gone away. Valjean assures her that he is forgiven, grateful to see this day and to have the chance to give thanks. He also acknowledges himself as a thoughtless and thankless man who owes everything to Cosette. Valjean reveals how he was carried to safety by her father during the barricade, sharing the story of his rescue and ultimate return to her.

In the final moments, Valjean finds solace in having Cosette by his side once again, knowing that his life is blessed because of her. Cosette, desperate for him to live longer, pleads for him to stay, but Valjean asks her to forbid him from dying. He promises to obey and try his best, and in his last confession written on the page, he expresses his love and gratitude for those who have always loved Cosette, particularly her mother who gave her life and entrusted her to his care.

Valjean envisions a place where there are no chains and all grief is left behind, urging Cosette to come with him. He implores the Lord in Heaven to look upon him with mercy, asking for forgiveness and for him to be taken to glory. In the closing lines, Valjean asks for his hand to be taken and to be led to salvation, emphasizing that love is everlasting. He also encourages the remembrance of the truth that has been spoken - that to love another person is to see the face of God.

Overall, "Epilogue" is a deeply moving song that showcases the themes of forgiveness, love, sacrifice, and the hope for redemption in the face of death.

The final shot of Elsa riding a frozen horse elemental, traversing the sunlit white glacial planes, towards Arendelle. Wonderful and glorious.

@rosewaterstories0101

I think she was actually riding to Ahtohollan based on the size. Either way, seeing her so happy and free made me tear up

@EMBEEAY

2:30 You’d be lying if you said you DIDN’T come for the spine-chilling score that played while Elsa froze the Nokk and rode past the Northuldra and the enchanted forest, while coming into contact with her spirit counterparts along the way- going as far as you can go North, she rides off into the distant sunset over the frozen sea to Ahtohallan, giving that one last sigh and look of relief as she is finally, truly, free and understands her place in this world, riding faster into the unknown that only she is able to travel- nothing but a silhouette in the distance who will one day be known a myth.

@RatArmyHeart

Exactly what I came here for 👌
