Smells Like Teen Spirit
Cast of Pan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over-bored and self-assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido

A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Cast of Pan are characterized by nihilistic themes that were common among grunge and alternative rock in the 1990s. The song employs a sarcastic tone and combines nonsensical phrases with dark imagery that reflects teenage angst and boredom. The opening lines of the song, "Load up on guns, bring your friends, it's fun to lose and to pretend," suggest that the singer is urging his friends to join him in an act of rebellion, and that their actions will have no real consequences.

As the song progresses, the singer's tone becomes more cynical and detached, as if he is commenting on the absurdity of the world he sees around him. "Hello, hello, hello, how low" is repeated several times throughout the song and seems to be an expression of the singer's nihilistic worldview. The lines "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us," suggest that the singer is intentionally behaving in a self-destructive way, perhaps as a way of rebelling against the societal norms.

The line "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido" seems to be a nonsensical phrase, but it has been interpreted as a reference to the diverse group of people that the singer sees around him, and the sexual desire that drives him. The final lines of the song, "a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial," suggest that the singer is incapable of facing reality and prefers to live in a world of denial.

@johnnyrocket1685

I mean, the song itself isn’t what’s bad. The rendition is pretty good. It’s the fact that this movie very clearly takes place during WW2 in the 1940s in LONDON, that makes this so bad.

They’re a bunch of dirty pirates in the 40s singing songs that won’t actually be written, much less performed, for another 60-70 years.

I get that it’s a fantasy film, but there’s a thing called Realism even in fantasy films. Just because a movie might be about medieval Knights fighting Dragons, doesn’t mean it can’t still be accurate to Reality in the sense of time period, clothing, speech patterns, music, etc.

.

This movie destroys all notions of realism by the fact that they mix 80 years of futuristic content into a 1940s based movie.

So the reason why this is in the movie is kind of neat.

All the cast were practicing their script when this song came on the radio, so they all sang along to it off script. It was just so surreal and cool that the producers/director decided to incorporate it into the film.

And they created this magical cinematic moment on the fly.

@tailsprowerfan2729

They aslo did it because the yo ho to ho song was overused

@sw1ng3ns

Seriously?

@pauloltman4960

the strangest decision for music to put in here its not sung bad but its just odd!

@pauloltman4960

also the ramones with blitzkrieg bop, again a weird decision!

@pauloltman4960

it was mostly because of the pirates movies, honestly

This scene gave me chills. Really shows how Blackbeard established dominance, and it terrified the kids.
