I absolutely HATE it when something like this happens and the parent says, "I only looked away for a second." If you want to look around a place like a zoo with a child, strap them into a stroller and stop having animals killed because you are, in short, neglectful. My parents always took us to place like zoos, wildlife, etc. in the 50s and 60s...SIX of us. But they had rules. And they enforced them. And we were disciplined instead of fawned and coddled. And we learned.

He was killed because everyone was in a panic and assumed he could kill the child at any time, which is true, he was capable. But he wouldn't have. @UnknownMasksW2serialirious that's really not that bad considering what could have happened, tbh. Worst case scenario gorilla mauls the child and rips him in half. This was the best case scenario, where the gorilla was clearly trying to be careful despite being in a bit of a panic. Child would have gotten over it in 5 minutes if the worst he had was sore leg and water up his nose.

I used to go to this zoo growing up and actually saw Harambe in real life. Never saw the footage of what happened that led to him being put down, but now that I have, it is even more disgusting that people killed an animal when all he did was be curious. It was never even his fault to begin with. Shame on the mother and shame on the people who decided to take his life years ago.

There was a report of a gorilla that saw a child in her enclosure. The gorilla didn’t harm the kid- actually, she GAVE THE KID BACK. She picked the kid up, cradled them, and went to the nearest entrance to her enclosure and gave the kid to keepers. These creatures are more peaceful than they looked

This still makes my blood boil. The parents should've been taken to jail and Harambe made the boy's adoptive father as he was clearly more concerned about him than his own parents were. What parents would sit idly by and watch their son potentially be mauled by an animal? (Though Harambe clearly was not hurting the boy) If this was my kid, (it wouldn't be because I WATCH my children) I would have jumped in after him and taken the beating if it was going to happen. Some people should NEVER reproduce and this is a clear example of that.

It still infuriates me that they put him down when he did no harm to the child that fell in HIS enclosure. They could easily have tranquilized him long enough to get the child back to his parents. This was so senseless to kill him :(

no tranquilizing would have angered him. All they had to do was calm the crowd down, and slowly enter the enclosure and calmly retrive the boy. No violence nessesary. A stupid crowd combined with an even stupider parent lead to the death of a peaceful creature who didn't even want to be there.

Not true, Most animals in modern zoos are pretty happy where they are. For many of the smaller animals, their enclosures aren’t much smaller than their range would be in the wild. Animals do not have the concepts of “freedom” or “captivity” like we do: if an animal is warm, fed, socialized and entertained, it is happy. Zoos nowadays have roomy enclosures and animal enrichment programs, where animals are given puzzles and new smells to keep it interesting

I live just an hours drive away from Gladys Porter Zoo where Harambe waa born and raised before being transferred to Cincinnati. My heart absolutely broke for Harambe, i missed seeing him at the zoo, and rhen to find out how his life was taken, all because of some irresponsible parents. 7 years later and I'm still heartbroken.

Whether or not Harambe would've harmed the boy is irrelevant. He was still a wild animal and wild animal's behavior can't really be predicted.

YES, Harambe was very gentle with the kid, but anything could've set him off. And as close to humans as gorillas are, you can't apply human motives and behavior to predict how a gorilla will react.

It's a sad situation that when animals run into humans, the animal usually loses.

He pulled the boy to a spot where more people could see him. And he held him, and comforted him. He examined his back for injuries. (Assuming the boy fell on somewhere near there.)

Edit: If Harambe was aggressive or wanted to kill the boy, he would have. I did not see any signs of hostility from Harambe.

Edit edit: A shame "animal experts" don't understand life and other livings things well enough to know that Harambe was not hostile, and decided to take his life, despite taking care of Harambe for a while, I'm sure. They should have known Harambe well enough to either have a rapport with him and convince or bribe him to give the boy to them. Animals are not brainless. (Edit edit edit:) Nor are they senselessly violent. ESPECIALLY in captivity. In captivity, they are usually senselessly bored.

you are a good example of how dangerous it is to just swallow what the media spoon feeds you.
the full video shows the gorilla grabbing the kid at the ankle and dragging him through the water like a freaking rag doll with the kids head towards the rock beds and his head submerged in the water.
this isnt the jungle book. this is real life. animals run on instincts. this isnt some domesticated lap dog. the gorilla should have been shot the moment he bursted through the entrapment while pulling the kid behind him. the staff gave if a chance. its a wild animal, a gorilla, not a person. the gorilla has no free will, it just follows its impulsive instincts. you can never fully predict the outcome. it is never safe. nothing was worth to put the kids life at risk, no matter whose fault it is.

I know the outcome hardly could be different, considering the situation. But it was a shame what happened with that magnificent creature. He was already in captivity, his small territory was invaded by a tiny human and even if he didn’t harm the child, he was killed because of the danger to do so. I hope the parents of that kid got a fine capable of compensating at least the material damage they caused.
