Rango
Catfish and the Bottlemen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm done for once
And as soon as I get out of here
I plan on coming back for nothing
But then again there's you
And although this town does flaunt
All the stuff you need to feel at home
I plan on taking from it nothing
But then again there's you

Abby she's got to wait
Until she gets you on your own
So she can make you make mistakes
And you can offer to take her home

It's not like I don't miss it none
But the quicker I drink more in here
The quicker I lose track of you
But I know you wouldn't want that
And although this town does flaunt
Much thicker stories than I care to talk
Darling you you've ducked them in style
I'll always love you for that

Abby she's got to wait
Until she gets you on your own
So she can make you make mistakes
And you can offer to take her home
And now she's wearing that top you love
And she's topping it all off
By acting like somethings up
She always knew how to pull the strings

You see Abby she's got to wait
Until she gets you on your own
So she can make you make mistakes
And you can offer to take her home
And now she's wearing that top you love
And she's topping it all off

By acting like somethings up
She always knew how to pull the strings

Overall Meaning

The beginning of the song expresses a sense of closure and a desire to move on. The singer sings about leaving behind a town that has nothing to offer him but the person he cares about. He recognizes that this person is the only reason he could see himself coming back to the town. Even though he wants to forget the town, he can't forget the person. As he drinks and tries to forget, he realizes that he doesn't want to lose track of this person.

The next part of the song introduces Abby, who seems to be a manipulative character. The lyrics suggest that Abby is waiting for an opportunity to make the person she's interested in make mistakes, possibly by taking advantage of him when he's alone, and then using it to her advantage. Although the singer misses the person, he knows that he can't let him fall into Abby's trap. He admires the person for being able to navigate the town's shady scenes without getting caught up in anything too dangerous, which is a testament to his strength.

In the final part of the song, Abby's true intentions become clearer. She's wearing a top that the person loves, and is acting strangely. The singer knows that Abby is up to something, and that she knows how to manipulate the person. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing how Abby is waiting for her chance to take advantage of the person. The song ends with the ominous line, "she always knew how to pull the strings."

Overall, "Rango" seems to be a cautionary tale about trusting the wrong people and getting caught up in dangerous situations. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a town where everyone is out for themselves, and the only way to survive is to keep your wits about you.
