I know how smart and devious crows can be so none of these antics surprised me. My dad came across a smart crow while watering the lawn. He only hearing someone saying hello but there was no one around. He finally looked up and found a cross on the rain gutter looking right at him saying hello. He kept it up until dad said hello bach, then he flew off. So if you didn't know they are just as capable of speech as parrots.

I’ll keep this in mind if I ever have a crow that says a load of me I will find some peanuts to establish a relationship. Both my grandfather on his farm and my father at his house both ended up feeling they’re crows but didn’t ever establish. I might be mistaken but all my life from time to time I have crows calling me it made me I should really start carrying around some food so I can start relationships I might be imagining all this but I’m gonna try it

Crows will they discover A dead animal but they cannot break open it’s high to eat from will find wolves and bring them to the carcass with the wolves open up the body of the animal feed and once they’re finished or evening for the finished crows taking their share

Crows are very smart. I once watched a crow follow a squirrel on a crust of frozen snow. Both were hungry. The squirrel moved around sniffing while the crow stayed close. Finding a scent the squirrel began digging and as he retrieved an acorn the crow jumped from around his back, snatched the nut, and quickly flew away. All just part of the survival game I suppose, as the squirrel just forged ahead to find another nut. They bury thousands in the fall.

Yes, they surely do, Ashley! A little more than three years ago, I befriended a family of four gorgeous specimens. To me, they'll always be remembered as Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Crow, teenager Carver Crow, and the perennially hungry toddler Cutie Crow. They once left a small key (likely from a bolt or lock), another time an old-fashioned bottle cap, small pieces of green glass, string, and more. Their gifts were left, at different times, on the glass-top table of my patio furniture.

Brilliant montage! There are many ravens throughout this video that are commonly mistaken for as crows, and vice versa. To an untrained eye, it can be challenging to tell them apart! If you ever have a tough time deciphering between the two, there are some key tells: if in flight, look for the shape of their tails. Ravens are diamond shaped and crows are wedge shaped. Ravens are substantially larger than crows, but this can be tough to decipher as young birds can emulate the opposite species. Ravens have a very deep croaking sound that rarely exceeds sets of three to four at a time, and crows will have a higher pitched "kaw" usually in rapid repetition and in sets of more than four to five "kaws" at a time. If you witness them making these vocalizations, crows will bob their entire body and toss their head upward and slightly back as they make these calls, ravens will point their beak forward and form more of a straight line when they call out. Ravens also have hackles (throat feathers that are noticeably pronounced and often protrude outward) and crows do not. The shape of their beaks is helpful in identifying the two; ravens have a larger pronounced beak and crows' beaks are smaller and come to a point. Crow's beaks tend to resemble the beaks of other corvidae, such as magpies. There are always instances of gray areas, but in my 10+ years researching corvids, these tips have never steered me wrong! Having lived in the Far North of Canada when young & observing, these wonderful creatures , especially observing them in Winter, when the Temp. was below 40c ( = 40 below zero F ) when the Ravens speak to each other , It is like listening to Sonar from a Submarine & it echo's, like Sonar,, it is quite something !! Also, that at those Temps. they have the Ability given them, by Mother Nature, to stop the blood supply going to their Feet, so they don't freeze their feet, while hanging onto Wires etc.. Ah !! Mother Nature is GRAND !!! :)))

I live in southern Colorado in an alpine valley, and there is a raven couple that I have been fortunate to befriend. I continuously learn so much from them, and everyday I am amazed by their intelligence and ability to comprehend patterns and why they occur. They actually sass a neighbor of mine who used to run a table saw whenever I would step outside to talk with the birds, and they 'chonk' repeatedly whenever a car pulls into my driveway that they do not recognize. I have focused so much of my research on their behavior that I have been overlooking their incredible physiological traits! I had a crow or raven come around every spring for quite a few years. I think they have an eight year life span and I think she came every spring for about five years. I would feed her and once she even brought her grown babies. I would feed her scraps while I fed my chickens scraps or occasionally feed her an egg if we had enough for us. I would have my chickens out and they were Seramas which are a very small chicken breed. Once, while I was feeding them, she called at me randomly and when I looked I saw that one of my cats were stalking my chickens. It was as if she warned me. She was very smart and interesting. I could get very close to her, but was never able to pet her. I think she was a raven though, because she wouldn't make a generic "Caw Caw" sound. Maybe occasionally. But she usually made noises like "Uh-uh."

The part that amazed me the most was how the crow got along with the dog. The one animal that is the best friend to man, seemed to be the best friend to crows too. In humans terms, I think it takes at least half a brain to figure that one out. Pretty smart birds.

That's actually a currawong being eaten by an Australian python. So it's not actually a corvid even though it looks like one. Snakes in Australia are something else, they swam there, then evolved to become the most among the venomous snakes on the planet, & they eat birds on roof-tops as a regular thing it seems! Once, in a local park, I observed crows doing something I'd never have imagined. Down among the lakes, there was a heron fishing. Two crows were playing a sort of `tag' game with the heron's tail feathers. They would wait until it was concentrating on the hunt, still & steadfast, ready to stab at some aquatic prey. Then they'd fly up from behind and tweak its tail-feathers. The heron would look round, but the crows would simply be perched on the rocks like a pair of innocents. This happened 4-5 times, with the heron becoming increasingly frustrated. Presently, the heron made a stab at something in the water - I think it might've been a toad - snapped it up and tossed it onto nearby soil. With that, both crows left the heron and descended upon the kill...Make of that what you will.

My mom used to have a pet crow when she was a teenager. She tells me stories about the intelligence and how complex their character could be. They are very social and recognise different people ang behave them accordingly. And most importantly they'll never forget things. Easy to train. Unfortunately it passed away in <5 years.

Yesterday morning I dropped my daughter off at her school and continued the short remainder of my drive to the office. It was very cold that morning, so the sidewalks around our town were relatively empty. As I was approaching an intersection, the light turned red and I stopped just before the crosswalk. While stopped, I happened to notice a raven standing on the curb-crosswalk edge, just off the front right corner of my SUV. The bird cocked its head a little right and a little left, then looked straight. The crosswalk pedestrian light turned green and the damn bird walked straight ahead, in front of my vehicle and in the middle of the crosswalk lines (covering a distance 4 road-lanes wide) to the opposite curve, then hopped over that curb to the other sidewalk. It didn't stop to pick something up or to wander...it was a deliberate walk, like a pedestrian, to make the light. I was shocked. That bird had more sense than a millennial with a skateboard.
Living in Switzerland, I have always appreciated the respect for pedestrians and crosswalk rules in this country. What I didn't realize, until yesterday, is that it applies, as well, to certain Swiss ravens!

Magpies are like this, too. In my neighborhood, the cats get messed with. It's interesting to see a cat walking down the sidewalk utterly defeated and a magpie shadowing him about a foot behind and cawing loudly.

At my mother's house, one of her dogs killed a magpie. For the remaining 6 years of that dog's life, that dog could not go outside without getting messed with by magpies (yes, multiple). My mom had another dog that never got hassled when she went outside. But the dog that killed a magpie was hounded for life, they never forgot about it.

Australian Magpies are not corvids and although well known for swooping people or danger, are very friendly birds. I have had a number of rescue birds - they aren't as car conscious as crows. and they have all been individuals with very high intelligence.

I had what I thought was a near impossible rat issue last year..perhaps there was only one..but I thought a lot..I heard them run over the ceiling..I'm reluctant to use poison..as it can affect birds of prey etc..but I was hearing gnawing at night and seeing things chewed..eventually I gave in and bought poison blocks..no more rat..and I expected more this year but nothing thus far..🙏

The most amazing crow behavior I saw was one crow dropped a turd on another crow, and the crow that got crapped on became angry and chased the crow who laid a turd on him through the air, cawing very loudly and angrily.....It's like the first crow ACTUALLY KNEW that crapping on the other crow was going to piss him off, and the other crow who got shit on was actually pissed off enough to chase the first crow around!!!! If THAT is not amazing behavior I don't know WHAT would be!!😳

I find that behavior even more amazing than the antics in this video!!!

What I find interesting is that they understand the general concept of "play" as opposed to particularized play acts.

They play in the snow, swing on strings, prank their companions, (or even other animals), and engage in a generalized sense of "fun". The concepts of "play" and the associated "sense of humor", is an extremely advanced concept.

But related to schoolyard bullying and the known expression "pecking order" ;) The instinct appears already in the nest, where the chicken will sometimes try to push each other out if possible (this has been filmed many times but isn't popular to bring into wildlife documentaries anymore). The pecking order instinct + the later instinct to train for certain survival movements is why they prank and have fun, basically.

Seagulls can scream at and flap their wings at or prank children eating food or an ice cream, in order to make the kid drop the food to the ground, where the birds will fight for it.
All the play and fun that birds do is connected to survival indirectly or directly. This is also why spiders weave webs neatly like an artist or fisherman, or why humans developed our minds : To survive better. The playfulness of some species come as a sort of top layer or extra candy to that but it isn't apart from the survival mechanism.

The first time I saw the crow in other videos raise the object by increasing the height of the water column by adding objects it absolutely figured it out faster than me or just as fast.....I always said that if a bird's Brain was the size of a marble instead of a pea we would be controlled by them

Loved the rooolling down sloped things, just for 'the fun of it' ... wow. I've always had an admiration for these Birds. Smart, dominate, mysterious- as in I've never seen a nest. Are they always hunting, up to high-jinx and exploring, with no need for sleep, or what?

I didn’t know crows were so versatile. Magpies draw more attention for being a danger in breeding season, but if you are friendly outside of breeding season, they don’t swoop you. Magpies can be taught to talk, and my mother lost many wire coat hangers from the clothesline, even though the hook was bent to stop them from being blown off by the wind. There must have been a lot of steel reinforced nests in our area.😄 The Australian punk band, Frenzal Rhomb, wrote a great song called “Bird Attack”. It describes our abject fear of magpies and other swooping birds, and the measures we take to protect ourselves, like the ice cream container helmet, with angry eyes drawn on it to frighten the magpies. It’s hilarious!

When my cats shed each year, the magpies come and pick off their fluff for nesting material. My old cat Ginger just lets them go at it, and even show them the best spots that need cleaning. One young crow became so brazen that he'd come in through the front cat door and demand a treat.

My childhood would have been a 1000 times more beautiful if I just knew how they really are. But the influence of so many horror movies made me think different about crows, ravens, ect

I've been reading a lot about these animals now for a while and I'm totally amazed, they like everything that sparkles and glitters and decorate their nests with it, and if a human catches their eye, they give them shiny stuff as a gift. Thats so cute, it's really very fascinating!

I see this giant crow everyday and i always say Hey chunky! At one point he had enough and came after me. Gave me a little tap om my head. It was so funny. Now when he sees me coming he stands on the side of the road, daring me to say chunky again 😆

In Norway where I live one of the seagull subspecies is called Krykkje (pronounced close to "cree-cha"), reminding maybe of something inbetween an albatross and a seagull in size. It's outcompeted by smaller seagull species that are in large increase in city and suburb numbers.
Anyway one of the seldomly seen krykkje seagulls was standing on the top of a post in town, near a row of bus stops looking over a certain area.
Along the bus stops at the same time walked an annoying group of american christian business sects around in white shirts, trying to trick and beg money out of the citizens, during the rush hour.
The krykkje slowly and arrogantly turned its tail around slightly and launched a large white pool of crap straight into the head and tie of one of the salesmen/priests ,whatever to call them.
He must have thought his god had stopped supporting him :) :) Many of the spectators including myself laughed our heads off, and applauded the bird.
From there and onwards the krykkje ranks high on my list of favorite animals, unlike the smaller seagull types who are a pain in the ass now and have becoming a sort of flying rats in large numbers (of course they are not to blame ; mankind builds many large building with flat roof-surfaces for the seagulls to use as egg hatching areas, something they say yes to effectively and also therefore have outnumbered many other former bird species in the urban areas including the good old krykkje)

Crows are fascinating and our mythology reflects this.
1. Odin has two named ravens which act as messengers.
2. The Morrigan (an Irish Goddess) sometimes takes the form of a crow and joins in with battles.
3. Crows act as spies in Lord if the Rings, but ravens are friendly with the Dwarves.
4. Crows (and rats) act as spies in the Wheel of Time.
There are numerous references in almost all religions to crows/ravens - so I don't think we humans will get bored of them any time soon...

I was watching two big crows bully a 1.2m Australian Eastern Brown snake ( the world's second-most venomous land snake ) a few weeks ago next to the Brisbane river. It was the Minor bird that drew my attention at first as the snake was under there tree and they were not happy about it. Then the crows sitting near me at the time flew over and start pecking at the snakes tail until the snake got annoyed then took shelter in a rock wall along the river.
I wish i had of taken some video footage of it but i was more wary of which direction the snake was heading and then very surprised at just how the crows were not scared of the snake.
