Hark! The herald angels sing:
"Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing:
"Glory to the newborn King"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing:
"Glory to the newborn King"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace
Hail the Son of Righteousness
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing:
"Glory to the newborn King"

Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"

Hark! The herald angels sing:
"Glory to the newborn King."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Celtic Woman's version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" call everyone to listen to the message of the heavenly angels, proclaiming Jesus' birth in Bethlehem. The lyrics explain that Jesus is the King of all nations, and his birth brings peace, mercy, and reconciliation to Earth. The song paints a beautiful picture of Jesus, the Savior, who was born of a Virgin, to bring light and healing. Jesus, as the song articulates, is "Christ by highest heav'n adored" and "Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace". The lyrics encourage us to join the angels in singing "Glory to the newborn King."

The song's verses explain that Jesus is not just the Savior, but also the "incarnate Deity" who comes to dwell among people. Though divine, He assumes human flesh, and the verse inspires listeners to envision God-made-man. It is a beautiful acknowledgment of the complicated nature of God's act. The last verse of the song glorifies Jesus as the One who brings second birth to humans, delivering eternal life, and giving them hope that there is always an opportunity for a fresh start.

They have the voice of angels. A fitting song to sing. I was listening to this and then realised "Celtic Women... They're the ones who sing Tir na Nog, which I loved so much!" Simply wonderful!

@olajordansgirlk712

They truly sound beautiful. I imagine this is how the angels sing.

Often people do not fully realize the depth of the theology of Christmas carols. This is one of those that is both thrilling to the heart and expresses the glory of the Incarnation.

After listening to what passes for Christmas music nowadays on the radio, I come to YouTube to hear the real thing! As a child, I memorized lyrics; as a 60-something, I'm enthralled with the sheer depth of meaning. Celtic Woman does exquisite justice to the beauty of the carol! 😺💕🐾
