Chaka Khan & Rufus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're the hi ... highlight
Day to day
You're the hi ... highlight
You're the bright side of my darkness
You remove my gloom
You picked me up when times got rough
To love and hold me close to your heat
To keep me safe and warm
You're the height of my desire
You set off my alarm
Day to day
You're the hi ... highlight
Day to day
You're the hi ... highlight
I can't wait to see you
From one moment to the next
With you I never know what new thrill to expect
Your perfect sense of timing
Keeps me coming back for more
You're the spark that lights my fire
It's you that I adore
Day to day
You're the hi ... highlight
Day to day
You're the hi ... highlight
The song "Highlight" by Chaka Khan and Rufus expresses the idea of a special someone who is the light in the darkness, the bright spot in an otherwise dreary existence. The repeated phrase "day to day, you're the highlight" emphasizes the significance of this person's presence in the singer's life. The singer goes on to describe this person as someone who removes their gloom and picks them up when times are rough. The person is a source of love and warmth, and they are the height of the singer's desire, setting off an alarm of attraction within them.
The singer also describes the excitement and unpredictability that this person brings to their life. They can't wait to see them from one moment to the next because they never know what new thrill to expect. This person's perfect sense of timing keeps the singer coming back for more. They are the spark that lights the singer's fire, and the person that they adore. The song is a celebration of the power of a special someone to bring joy, excitement, and love into someone's life.

@powder-blue
The end of the first verse is “you set off my alarm” then she sirens her way in to the second verse, as the alarm itself. Brilliant!

this was a classic album that was overlooked...they had some banging track...gr8 memories...they brought it on this album...the last one...
@mykael-soul-rock
This was to be the last studio album recorded by Rufus and Khan. They had already Officially disbanded before recording Camouflage. Their contract obligated them to record one more, which was their one and only live album, "Stomping at the Savoy." Camouflage didn't get the same label backing as their previous albums, which explains (in part) why the album did not do well on the charts; it peaked at #15 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart, and stalled at #98 on Billboard's Pop Album Charts.

A few years ago I met Angela backstage at B.B. Kings and I told her how much I loved this cut.
She didn't remember it...I had to remind her that she wrote it..when she remembered she laughed out loud!!
She was quite gracious!!
