"I'm the Sheik of Araby,
Your love belongs to me.
At night when you're asleep
Into your tent I'll creep.
The stars that shine above,
Will light our way to love.
You'll rule this land with me;

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Champion Jack Dupree's song The Sheik of Araby are actually a modified version of the original song, which was written in 1921 by Harry B. Smith, Francis Wheeler, and Ted Snyder. The song has a romantic theme, with the singer proclaiming to his lover that he is the Sheik of Araby and that her love belongs to him. He then goes on to say that at night, he will creep into her tent and that they will rule the land together.

The lyrics of the song can be interpreted in different ways, but one possible meaning is that the singer is presenting himself as a powerful and wealthy man who can provide for his lover and protect her. He is confident and in control, and he assures his lover that they will share a passionate and adventurous love. The line "I'll creep into your tent" can be seen as a metaphor for the intimacy and secrecy of their relationship, while the reference to the stars suggests that their love is magical and pure.

The Sheik of Araby has been covered by many artists over the years, including Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, and The Beatles. The song has also been featured in several films and TV shows, including The Muppet Show and Disney's Aladdin. It remains a popular jazz and swing standard today.

on She Cooks Me Cabbage

The only line that confuses me is "and she called them turnip greens." Anyone got an idea what Champion Jack is trying to convey here? Why would she cook him cabbage and call it turnip greens?
