Char and Amber are of Irish and Scottish descent and are finding many Celtic fans love their peaceful contemporary folk style including the penny whistle on "Sleepers Awake". Char started singing at the age of six in a small church in western Oklahoma and has studied voice, clarinet and guitar. She was the guitar instructor at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma for many years, performed in the Enid Symphony, directed church choirs, and was a vocal competition judge at the Tri State Music Festival. Char holds a Master Degree from Oklahoma State University and her daughter Amber, holds a Bachelors Degree from Arizona State University. Amber is featured on 'Sleepers Awake' album singing lead vocals on the 5th track "Waited 'til Noon".
Char's second self produced album 'Sleepers Awake' released in June 2009 entices listeners with a rootsy sound that is full of intricate harmony. Their music has an eclectic grouping of songs some considered to be Folk/Americana with vocal kinship to Paula Cole, and Joni Mitchell but instrumental composition similar to U2 and ColdPlay. Her music also has songs that reflect a New Age/Celtic sound incorporating world instruments similar to Loreena McKennitt. As a writer her lyrics focus on loss, peace and healing although she does have some unreleased material with a darker side ready to pitch to television vampire and werewolf series. Char is a believer in positive thought and is tuned into the energy movement worldwide. Her first album 'Secrets of the Heart' is being used in ICU hospital recovery units, massage clinics and yoga classes. Some of the songs on the CD are referring to the invisible realm and the veil that exists between reality and the spiritual realm. Char feels that the quote, "Be Still and Know God" is very significant in her own life. Her music is available on her website www.charbutler.com as well as itunes and cdbaby. Peace
Char Butler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In streams of madness we create a great divide.
In times of sadness we find someone to blame.
In times of gladness we find, someone to change.
Chorus:
Whatever happened to walk-in hand in hand?
Whatever happened to friendship in our plan?
Whatever happened to thoughts of peace in every land?
Verse:
These are the days our minds are open to surprise,
awakening the feminine spirit inside.
In times of sadness we'll find someone to claim.
In times of gladness we'll find, we can change.
Chorus:
Whatever happened to walk-in hand in hand?
Whatever happened to friendship in our plan?
Whatever happened to thoughts of peace in every land?
Ooh, how I'd like to hear them say, peace. Whoa, peace.
Bridge:
Whatever happens we will survive.
Whatever happens our minds are alive.
Whatever happens we will survive.
Whatever happens, our minds are alive.
Chorus:
Whatever happened to walk-in hand in hand?
Whatever happened to friendship in our plan?
Whatever happened to thought of peace in every land?
Whatever happened to thought of peace in every land?
Ooh, how I'd like to hear them say, peace.
Whoa, peace. Whoa, peace.
These lyrics explore the themes of division and longing for peace in our world. The first verse sets the tone by highlighting how we often take sides and create divisions amidst chaos and madness. In times of sadness, we seek someone to blame, and in times of joy, we strive to change others. The chorus reflects on the loss of unity and friendship, questioning what happened to the idea of walking hand in hand and promoting peace in every land. The repetition of the word "peace" expresses the yearning for its presence.
The second verse introduces the idea of being open-minded and receptive to surprises. It mentions the awakening of the feminine spirit, suggesting a need for balance and nurturing qualities in times of crisis. Similar to the first verse, it emphasizes our tendency to assign blame in sadness and our potential to effect change in times of happiness.
The bridge provides a sense of hope and resilience. It reinforces the notion that no matter what happens, we will survive and our minds will remain alive. This serves as a reminder that despite the challenges we face, our capacity to think and envision peace perseveres.
The final repetition of the chorus emphasizes the longing for peace and friendship. It poses the question once again, asking what happened to the idea of peace in every land. It yearns to hear the words "peace" spoken, hoping for a world where unity and harmony prevail over division and conflict. The repetition of "peace" at the end reinforces the strong desire for this ideal to become a reality.
