New Shapes
Charli XCX Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What you want
I ain't got it
What you want
What you want
I ain't got it
What you want
I ain't got it
I don't know why I got a tendency to run away
Don't know why I'm always pushing for a sweet escape
Even though I feel so close
I just can't control how I feel
And I gotta be free
Need to breathe
But sometimes I need

All night
All day
We could fall in love in new shapes
New shapes
When the morning comes
I'm sorry
I stayed
Tell you honestly, I can't change
Can't change

What you want
I ain't got it
What you want
What you want
I ain't got it
I ain't got it

What if I
Created places for you to let go
What if you
Wanted to watch because we both know
That now we are so close we don't have to fight how we feel
When the lights and the skins are a call so surrender to it

All night, all day
Then we fall in love in new shapes, new shapes
When the morning comes all misty, we fade
'Cause we fell in love in new shapes
In new shapes

What you want
I ain't got it (got it)
What you want
(We could go on)
What you want
I ain't got it
I ain't got it

Thinking of me but you're stuck on the West side again
Maybe we're meant for another dimension, babe
Deep in the dark of your brain like a star in space
You call it art but you pulled out my heart
And you twisted it into a new shape
Yeah, I'm dive bombing again and again
Trying to get up close to you
Fucked if I know how it's gonna end
But honestly life would be better
If I never met you in the first place

What you want
I ain't got it (yeah)
What you want
(I ain't got it)
What you want
I ain't got it
(Charli, Caroline, Chris)
What you want
(What you want, what you want)
I ain't got it (what you want)
What you want
I ain't got it
What you want
What you want
I ain't got it

(I ain't got it, baby)
I ain't got it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of New Shapes by Charli XCX feat. Christine and the Queens & Caroline Polachek discuss a complex relationship that the singer is struggling with. The song talks about the conflict between wanting to be free, but also wanting to fall in love and how it often leads to confusion and misunderstandings. The chorus says, "All night, all day, we could fall in love in new shapes" which suggests that the relationship is unconventional and not easy to define. The singer admits to having the tendency to run away from the relationship and push for a sweet escape, but also acknowledges feeling close to the person.

The lyrics further delve into the idea of surrendering to the relationship despite the confusion and unknown outcomes. The line "when the lights and skins are a call so surrender to it" talks about giving in to the physical attraction and allowing oneself to fully experience the relationship despite uncertainty. The second half of the song talks about the struggle of getting close to the person, but also being unsure of how it will end. The final line, "I ain't got it" is a repetition of a phrase from the chorus that emphasizes the lack of clarity and stability in the relationship.

@julelune

One of my favorite things about Charli’s music is that she collabs with many artists multiple times. This makes for incredible music and the collabs don’t seem random, but based on chemistry and mutual understanding of each other’s artistry<3

@dancalf

Yess, I feel the same. Like it creates this hype when she collabs with the same person because we already have seen how great things work between the two. Like another song with Cristine, you know is gonna be a banger. On the other hand you wonder when she will collab again with some great artists. I'm hoping for a collab with Rina Sawayama again.

@mirabelle_mirage

yes! i just noticed that she often has more collabs on an album than „solo“ songs which is so cool because i normally don’t really enjoy features of other artists. charli just does it different tho and it is refreshing because every song is so different

@James-if3kc

Nah, they're just all in the illuminati together, that's why.
