Never Too Late
Charlie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I caught the train, I met a dame
She was a hipster, well and a rock of dame
She was pretty, from New York City
Well and we trucked on down in that old Fairlane
(Goin' on)

With a heave and a ho
(Wo)
Well, I just couldn't let her go
(Yes, I did)

Get along, sweet little woman, get along
Be on your way
Get along, sweet little woman, get along
Be on your way

With a heave and a ho
(Love the way you walk)
I just couldn't let her go
(Yes, I do now)

Well, the train kept a-rollin' all night long
(Sweet little woman, get along)
The train kept a-rollin' all night long
([Unverified])

The train kept a-rollin' all night long
(Sweet little woman, get along)
The train kept a-rollin' all night long
(You're my queen)

With a heave and a ho
(Love the way you walk)
Well, I just couldn't let her go
(Yes, I do)

We made a stop at Albuquerque
She must have thought I was a real gone jerk
We got out the train in El Paso
Lookin' so good, Jack, I couldn't let her go

Get along, sweet little woman, get along
(Oh, right)
Well, the train kept a-rollin' all night long
The train kept a-rollin' all night long
The train kept a-rollin' all night long
The train kept a-rollin' all night long

With a heave and a ho
Well I just couldn't let her go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Charlie's song "Never Too Late" seem to tell the story of a chance encounter with a woman on a train, and the attraction that develops between them. The singer describes the woman as a "hipster" and "rock of dame," indicating that she is edgy and cool, and clearly capturing his interest. As they travel together, the singer can't bring himself to let her go, despite her attempts to leave. He describes the train rolling on through the night, and their journey taking them to Albuquerque and El Paso. The chorus, "get along sweet little woman, get along, be on your way," seems to suggest that the woman is trying to end things with the singer, or maybe that he knows he needs to let her go, but he just can't bring himself to do it.

Overall, the lyrics of this song seem to capture the feeling of being swept up in a moment of passion or infatuation, without really knowing where it might lead. The singer is clearly smitten with the woman he meets on the train, and is willing to follow her wherever she goes. However, it's not entirely clear whether this is a love story with a happy ending, or a cautionary tale about getting swept up in something without really knowing where it's going.

This is fantastic!!!

I picked this up from a cassette cut-out bin in the 90s as a curiosity. It was weird to hear an 80s English band that sounded like Survivor (instead of Duran Duran). This song in particular borrows the opening chords to "Eye Of The Tiger" for the bridge.
Good news: Steve Gadd is the drummer!
Bad news: It's not the same Steve Gadd.
