Lights Off
Charlie Cunningham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To say it was a different walk in
A different walk in a different park is what it was
This one was different
You could see it when she walked inside
It wasn't as bad as you might have thought
They don't want to see the light you had get burned away
You must have been different that day
See, I always thought that they's seen you like a charming man
But you don't feed them something then that you mean, boy
And learn to love these days, boy
She see what you mean cause she's seen it
Well, she don't want to know, she's seen the way you'll go
Listen, that stuff it's not wrong cause it's your song
So, lights off
She see what you mean cause she's seen it
Well, she don't want to know, she's seen the way you'll go
Listen, that stuff it's not wrong cause it's your song
So, lights off
They don't want to see the light you had get burned away
You must have been different that day
See, I always thought that they's seen you like a charming man
But you don't feed them something then that you
And learn to love these days, boy
She see what you mean cause she's seen it
Well, she don't want to know, she's seen the way you'll go
Listen, that stuff it's not wrong cause it's your song
So, lights off
She see what you mean cause she's seen it
Well, she don't want to know, she's seen the way you'll go
Listen, that stuff it's not wrong cause it's your song
So, lights off
The falling star you saw that was something coming
These moments are your life, acknowledge them
It's easier the fall if you're closer to the floor, but that's all
The falling star you saw that was something coming
These moments are your life, acknowledge them
It's easier the fall if you're closer to the floor, but that's all
She been there, seen it all
That's not your fault

It's your song playing though
Lights off

Overall Meaning

The song “Lights off” by Charlie Cunningham is a soulful melody that appears to tell a personal story of struggle, acceptance, and perseverance. The opening verse paints a picture of a different, unusual atmosphere that the singer finds himself in. The phrase “It wasn’t as bad as you might have thought” suggests that the singer may have been apprehensive or fearful before this experience, but he ends up feeling relatively okay. The next verse talks about how people often do not want to see something unique or innovative fail, and that the singer may have presented something like that on the day in question. Despite the setback, the singer is encouraged to continue on his path and learn to “love these days”.

The chorus of the song then kicks in with a repetition of the line “She see what you mean cause she’s seen it”, referring to someone who has seen the singer’s vision and understands it. The next line says “Well, she don’t want to know, she’s seen the way you’ll go”, perhaps hinting at a sense of detachment that the singer feels from others who choose not to pursue his vision. The singer then says “That stuff it’s not wrong cause it’s your song”, seemingly giving himself some reassurance that what he is creating is authentic and worth pursuing.

The song closes with a verse that can arguably be seen as inspirational. The line “The falling star you saw that was something coming” suggests that even when something appears to be falling apart, it can actually be leading to a brighter future. The singer implores himself to “acknowledge” these moments in life and embrace them. The repeated phrase “That’s not your fault” seems to indicate that the singer is letting go of some feeling of self-blame or guilt, while “It’s your song playing though/Lights off” may suggest that he is about to tackle a new experience or create a new work of art.

He is singing to a man who gave his all to a woman who just couldn't reciprocate in the end. The man gave his love, his own special love, his own unique song but she couldnt hear it, she couldn't feel it. Her heart had already loved and broke many times before. "She's been there, seen it all, that's not your fault."
Such beautiful lyrics. Love the meaning. The video is so wholesome, it could be a snapshot of any regular persons life. Amazing voice with a melancholic ring. Music that breaks the heart for those that have felt love.
