Rust
Charlie Lim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love
You're just a war
You shoot me down
Like the morning star

Girl
Just take your time
I wait for no one else
Until you're mine

Oh
Is it too late?
To tear your walls down
And lay this weight

You fall
Into my arms
Into this pit of love
Into my heart

But you crawl
Back into his bed
His bones his body
His mind his head

Wait
Before you go
I cannot love you
If I don't know

True
We know the facts
Time is running and
We can't look back

Stop
Before we cross
Our minds are flooded now
And our lives turn to rust

Forgiveness
Is by grace
But I'm not God
So why should I stay?

But you wait
For a while
Even though I know
He wants to bear your child

But you crawl
Back into his bed
His bones his moaning
His mouth his head

Wait
Before you go
I cannot love you
If I don't know

I know you lie
I know you cry
But you should know

I'll be here
I'll be waiting
I'll be praying

Till you're gone, gone, gone
Till you're gone, gone, gone

Till you're gone, gone, gone
Till you're gone, gone, gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlie Lim's "Rust" speak of unrequited love and the struggle to move on from it. Love is portrayed as a war, as it often is in popular culture, where the shooter ultimately prevails. The use of the metaphor of the morning star is particularly interesting because it is a fleeting celestial object that disappears by daybreak, much like the singer's love interest. The singer urges the object of his affection to take her time in deciding whether she wants him, but his patience can only last so long.

Throughout the lyrics, the singer acknowledges the futility of continuing this unrequited love affair but finds himself unable to move on. He longs for the love interest to "fall into [his] arms," but she keeps crawling back to her current partner's bed, even though the relationship seems to be dissatisfactory for her ("his moaning/his mouth his head"). The singer is torn between his desire for the love interest and his own efforts to move on from her.

The lyrics of "Rust" also touch on themes of time and regret, as the singer worries that they might not have much time left to make a move before they're both lost to the sands of time. Forgiveness, too, is a theme, with the singer acknowledging that he can't forgive the love interest for stringing him along, even as he acknowledges his own shortcomings in the situation. Ultimately, the song ends with the singer promising to be there for the love interest, even as he acknowledges that he may be waiting for her indefinitely.
