Soul Man
Charlie and the Bachelors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

SOUL OF A MAN

I want somebody to tell me
Answer if you can
I want somebody to tell me
What is a soul of a man

Well, I've traveled to different countries
I've traveled to the foreign lands
I've found nobody to tell me

I want somebody to tell me
Answer if you can
I want somebody to tell me
What is a soul of a man

I saw a crowd talking
I came up right on time
He was teaching the lawyer and the doctor
A man ain't nothing but his mind

Said I want somebody to tell me
Answer if you can
I want somebody to tell me
What is a soul of a man

I'm going to ask the question
Answer if you can
If anybody can tell me
What is the soul of a man

Somebody should tell me
Answer if you can

I want somebody to tell me
What is a soul of a man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Soul Man" by Charlie and the Bachelors explore the idea of the soul and its nature, asking questions about what it means to be human. The singer begins by stating they want someone to answer the question of what a soul is, as they have traveled far and wide looking for answers without success. They go on to describe a scene where they witness someone teaching a lawyer and doctor that a man's worth comes from their mind, rather than any external factors.

The singer is persistent in their quest for understanding, repeating their desire for answers and asking anyone who can tell them what a soul is. The song is ultimately a reflection on the complexity and mystery of the human condition, suggesting that even with all of our knowledge and experience, we may never truly comprehend the soul's essence.

Overall, "Soul Man" is a thought-provoking and introspective song that encourages listeners to consider their own beliefs about what makes a person who they are.

How do we know Charlie didn't knock up the boy's real mother? He's been with just about every other woman, why not her?
