Martin got her start singing opera while attending Eastern Illinois University in the late '90s. Her father was a respected professor in the music department, and naturally Martin followed his footsteps. She began playing piano when she was a little girl and her childhood was surrounded by music.
While attending school, Martin experienced "real life," from living with her goth roommate and dealing with typical college-like drama to the tragic suicides of two close friends. Martin turned to music for solace. She desperately wanted to make music into a career; therefore, a whirlwind move to Los Angeles seemed like the right thing to do.
Martin eventually made a record, One Girl Army, with producer Tom Rothrock (Badly Drawn Boy, Beck, Elliott Smith), but it was never released. Before 2002 came to a close, Martin got her own studio and recorded a new batch of songs with Ken Andrews (Air, Pete Yorn). The melodic dreamscapes of In Parentheses arrived in August 2003 and Martin's bright voice drew comparisons to Fiona Apple and Kate Bush. Dates with Howie Day and Damien Rice also coincided with the release of the EP.
On Your Shore followed in 2004. Unfortunately, Martin's relationship with RCA proved creatively trying as the singer/songwriter continued writing and recording new material. A decision to leave the major label in 2005 allowed Martin to accomplish her creative goals, thus reconnecting with Test-Drive Records to issue the Veins and Darkest Hour EPs before the year's end. Additional support dates around North American followed into the fall, and Martin rounded out the Veins tour with her first DVD recording, the limited-edition Something Like a DVD.
She also married her long-time collaborator and co-producer, Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn, Year of the Rabbit, Failure), in the midst of recording her second album, Stromata. The album arrived on Martin and Andrews' own Dinosaur Fight label in September 2006.
In 2009, Martin released the instrumental album Piano Trees, a collection of improvised piano songs.
In 2011, Martin released her album, Dancing on Needles.
In 2014, Martin released Water Breaks Stone.
On October 5, 2018, Martin released the second of her instrumental piano albums (after Piano Trees), entitled Clear Blue Sky. The following year, in 2019, two more albums in a similar vein were released: Monotonous Night on March 8 and Dawn on December 27.

Every Time It Rains
Charlotte Martin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I wonder what's so great about sunshine
So everybody lives and everybody dies
And no one's gonna love you like I do
When its getting dark I
Didn't need a match I
Never needed light to see you
I was always here
I could never get that far from you
Though I misunderstand
And been misunderstood
So love me cause you can
And not because you should
Every time it rains
I know it's good to be alive
Every time it rains
I know I'm trying to survive
So take it as it comes
And take me as I am
I never was a good impostor
Well I know how to dream
But, don't know where I stand
And, I'm willing to admit I try to hard
Stop playing with my heart
I'm waiting by the phone
Afraid to be myself
Afraid to be alone
But every time it rains
I know it's good to be alive
Every time it rains
I know I'm trying to survive
And every time it rains
I'm gonna hide myself inside
I know it's good to be alive
I know it's good to be alive
I know it's good to be alive
But every time it rains
I know it's good to be alive
Every time it rains
I know I'm trying to survive
And every time it rains [Repeat x4]
Charlotte Martin's song "Every Time It Rains" is a melancholic yet beautiful expression of love and life. The song opens with the singer saying that every time it rains, she listens to the sky and wonders what's so great about sunshine. She then reflects on the transient nature of life, saying that everybody lives and everybody dies and no one can love someone like she does. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and a desire to hold on to something that is fleeting.
As the song progresses, Charlotte reflects on the fact that love is not always easy. She acknowledges that she has misunderstood and been misunderstood, and that love should be given freely and not out of obligation. The singer then confesses that she is afraid to be herself and afraid to be alone, which highlights her insecurity and vulnerability.
The chorus of the song is repeated several times throughout, expressing the belief that every time it rains, it's good to be alive, and that even in difficult times, we are trying to survive. The final lines of the song reveal the singer's desire to hide inside herself when it rains, perhaps as a metaphor for closing oneself off emotionally.
Overall, "Every Time It Rains" is a haunting yet powerful reflection on life, love, and the human experience.
Line by Line Meaning
Every time it rains I listen to the sky
I feel connected with nature and appreciate the rain's beauty
I wonder what's so great about sunshine
I am questioning whether sunny days are really better than rainy ones
So everybody lives and everybody dies
Life is fleeting and we are all mortal beings
And no one's gonna love you like I do
I care for you deeply, and no one else can match my love for you
When its getting dark I
As the night approaches, I
Didn't need a match I
Do not need a flame to see
Never needed light to see you
I always see you, even in the darkness
You thought I disappeared but
You assumed I had vanished, but
I was always here
I never really went away
I could never get that far from you
I am always drawn to you, no matter where I go
Though I misunderstand
Although I may not comprehend everything
And been misunderstood
And have experienced being misinterpreted as well
So love me cause you can
Please love me simply because it is possible to do so
And not because you should
Rather than feeling obligated to love me
Every time it rains
Whenever it rains
I know it's good to be alive
I am reminded of the preciousness of life
I know I'm trying to survive
I realize that I am fighting to keep going
So take it as it comes
I accept whatever happens, as it happens
And take me as I am
And accept me as I truly am
I never was a good impostor
I have never been good at pretending to be someone else
Well I know how to dream
I am good at envisioning the future
But, don't know where I stand
But sometimes, I am unsure about what my place in the world is
And, I'm willing to admit I try to hard
I acknowledge that I sometimes put too much effort into things
Stop playing with my heart
Please do not toy with my emotions
I'm waiting by the phone
I am patiently hoping for a call
Afraid to be myself
I am scared to reveal my true self
Afraid to be alone
I fear being deserted by everyone
But every time it rains
However, whenever it rains
I'm gonna hide myself inside
I will conceal myself from others
I know it's good to be alive
Despite everything, I still believe life is worth living
I know it's good to be alive
I understand that life is precious
I know it's good to be alive
I am well aware that life is valuable
Every time it rains
Whenever it rains
I know it's good to be alive
I am reminded of the beauty of being alive
I know I'm trying to survive
I am fighting to keep going
And every time it rains
And each time it rains
I'm gonna hide myself inside
I will withdraw from the outside world
And every time it rains [Repeat x4]
And every time it rains, it affects me in some way - repeating this thought four times
