Star Spangled Banner
Chase Holfelder Lyrics

O say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

Hey Chase -- so good. As a Chaplain in the United States Navy and local leader of a congregation -- I often write a thought for key holidays. Today your video was linked to the thought for the day. So an expanded audience will be introduced to you.
Throughout our nation's history there have been days of brightness and days of gloom. There have been seasons when we were at our best and seasons when we did not live up to our greatest aspirations. Along the trail -- there have been days of celebration and days of m
Sometimes along our route of history we discovered strengths we never knew we had. At other times along our route, we have been dismayed to discover darker sides that the light of truth shone upon us.

Always along our journey there has been this sense that America has always been in the process of seeking to live up to our highest ideals to truly become that "sweet land of liberty."

Now -- we find ourselves in a season of gloom and introspection as we realize that in some places -- we are not yet the nation we have dreamed of being. This is not to denigrate the wonder and good of the past -- but rather to ask, as each generation must, "What is my place in this part of our national journey to pick up where "my father's died" that true freedom understood in my generation might ring?"

As we do so -- we should look back on our shared history embracing what is good - even as we understand that what was good was often put forward by flawed human beings whose faults for wrong will sometimes stand enmeshed with their triumphs for good.

Perhaps, as we view both the strong and the weak, the right and the wrong, we will be humbled in this time to understand that our descendents may discover strengths and flaws in us. And as they do, may it be that it is the strengths that they embrace and build upon.

There is a verse in the Bible that says "Cling to what is good. Abhor what is evil" For ourselves -- individually pray that you see what is good and cling to it. For others -- whether in the present or the past, may it be that you do not lose the ability to see what is good and cling to it for them -- even while you call out what is wrong. Such an action, fulfills the first part of the verse "Let love be without hypocrisy"

So then -- in our lives -- whether the musical key of life accompanies a season of major joy.....or a seaon of minor gloom....for each of us "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil: cling to what is good." Romans 12:9

I have a mental image of this playing over a trailer for a Captain America movie wherein a LOT of people die.

I generally have trouble liking singers' renditions of this song because they're so liberal with adding adlibs and they make it twice as long as it should be. He changed the entire key and it's the most beautiful version I've ever heard.

@odst_0054

i know you what mean. As if they try to over-dramatize it to show off their voice. The tune of it, some popular English chorus as the time, had a completely different tempo, and sounded less dramatic. You should check it out!

@emoyeo5223

It’s already a vocally challenging song idk why people like to show off as if singing it well on its own isn’t impressive enough
