The band formed iteratively around Sweeney between '92-'94. They released Gone Glimmering in '95 followed by Ride The Fader in '96, both on Matador.
Sweeney, a longtime friend of Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, has also played in Corgan's side-project, Zwan, and more recently in a duo with Will Oldham on their Superwolf album.
Pitchfork recently reviewed the new Chavez compilation which also contains some nice observations about their sound and its context.
After a lengthy hiatus between 1999 and 2006 they have recently begun playing extensively around the New York area.
Unreal Is Here
Chavez Lyrics

What can't be done
Your unreal is here now
Correct, you can learn now
What truth denies
Your unreal is here now
There are weeks upon years upon days that...
Things that can happen
Happen to you
Your unreal is here now
There is nothing to not be amazed at
There are weeks upon years upon days that...
Just take this with you
Just take this with you...
The lyrics to Chavez's "Unreal Is Here" reflect on the idea that we are capable of achieving what was once considered impossible or unrealistic. The opening lines, "Yes, you will do now, what can't be done," suggest a sense of empowerment and encouragement to the listener. The chorus repeats the phrase "Your unreal is here now," emphasizing the idea that we are able to accomplish what we once thought was out of reach. This theme of overcoming obstacles is further explored in the line "Correct, you can learn now, what truth denies," implying that even what is believed to be truth can be challenged and overcome.
The verses reflect on the idea that even the most unlikely things can happen, and that we should be amazed at the possibilities that exist around us. The line "There is nothing to not be amazed at" suggests that we should be open-minded and receptive to the world around us, and the potential it holds.
The final lines of the song, "Just take this with you, just take this with you," can be interpreted as a call to action. The listener is encouraged to take the message of the song with them and apply it to their own life.
Overall, "Unreal Is Here" is a song that celebrates the idea of pushing beyond what is considered feasible, and embracing the possibilities that come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

What do I know--well not much BUT post 2000s "indie/alternative" SUCKS-it's full of pretense and cliche's and no ROCK. Please turn me on to a "new" (in the past 10 yrs) band that actually kicks ass.
