By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

Empty Love
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The waves
They′re drowning all that there once was
The break
Of dawn
Is coming somewhere up above
I feel it in my bones
I'm breathing empty love
There′s nothing left anymore
You say that you could want me
Why not before?
The world is black and white
That's all you get with love
Slow revolve
Around the floor
Darkness is my life
Dizzy heart
Beats
For you
I am still alive
I feel it in my bones
I know you after all
I'm brеathing empty love
Therе′s nothing left anymore
You say that you could want me
Why not before?
The world is black and white
Only know me when you
Come down from it
Only breaks you when you
Can′t feel a thing
Only want it when you
Know you've lost it
Only need it when you
Can′t breathe again
I feel it in my bones
I know you after all
I'm breathing empty love
There′s nothing left anymore
You say that you could want me
Why not before?
The world is black and white
That's all you get with love
That′s all you get with love
That's all you get with love
In the first verse of Chelsea Cutler's “Empty Love,” she paints the picture of the aftermath of a relationship. She uses a metaphor of the sea, representing waves drowning everything that was once there, possibly referring to what was once their love is now being overwhelmed and washed away. The imagery of the break of dawn somewhere above evokes hope of a new beginning, but this hope seems to be hazy and unclear. The singer feels it in her bones that the person she loved is after all just not the one for her. She is breathing empty love, and there is nothing left to hold onto anymore. The line “the world is black and white” connotes a sense of bleakness and simplicity, a world devoid of color, passion, and love.
The second verse talks about the confusion that love brings and the dizziness it causes. The line “darkness is my life” may reflect on the singer's state of mind, where everything feels bleak and lifeless. The “dizzy heart” beating for someone who may not be worth it further adds to the confusion and desperation. The repetition of “I am still alive” suggests that the only thing this person is holding onto is this love that is no longer whole, but it is still keeping them alive.
The chorus talks about the cycle of love and the pain and emptiness it can cause. The line “Only know me when you come down from it” suggests that the singer's lover only realizes their love for her when they are going through a tough time in their lives, and they have no one else to go to. The world may seem numb and lifeless, and it is only after experiencing a loss that they realize what they had. The line “That's all you get with love” reiterates the idea that everything is temporary when it comes to love, and it is not always what it seems.
