By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

Men on the Moon
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I still don't know how to get to you
And now all I can do
Is wait for you to come down, mm
We built weapons of war
But I'm out of bullets to fire
My temper is short
But I'm here giving up my ground
Ooh, it's only war if there's a winner
Ooh, it's only hell if there's a sinner
Ooh, and I'd do all the things we didn't
Ooh, 'cause I choose you
Yeah, I choose you
We put men on the moon
But I can't figure out what is missin'
And in every room
You're right in front of me
We find pictures in stars
But they're thousands of miles away, oh
And I'll give you my all
But you take and you take and you take
Ooh, it's only war if there's a winner
Ooh, it's only hell if there's a sinner
Ooh, and I'd do all the things we didn't
Ooh, 'cause I choose you
Yeah, I choose you
I do
I'm not the same as I was before
I'll go through the walls and kick down doors
No, I'm not the same as I was before
And I wouldn't hurt you anymore
(I'm not the same as I was before)
It's only war if there's a winner
(I'll go through the walls and kick down doors)
It's only hell if there's a sinner
(No, I'm not the same as I was before)
And I'd do all the things we didn't
(And I wouldn't hurt you anymore)
'Cause I choose you
Yeah, I choose you
I do
Chelsea Cutler's song Men on the Moon is about the struggle to connect with someone you love. The opening line, "We put men on the moon, but I still don't know how to get to you," sets the tone for the song - even though humanity has achieved incredible feats like walking on the moon, the singer still can't find a way to reach the person she cares about. The frustration and disappointment in this is highlighted when she sings, "And now all I can do is wait for you to come down."
The lyrics continue to explore the disconnect between the singer and her lover. While the world has advanced in many ways, finding a way to connect with someone emotionally can still be an elusive task. The metaphor of building weapons of war but being out of bullets to fire adds to the idea that despite mankind conquering some of the most difficult challenges in history, some of the most important things like human connection can still be out of reach.
As the song progresses, the singer talks about being willing to do anything to make their relationship work. The repetition of "Ooh, it's only war if there's a winner, Ooh, it's only hell if there's a sinner" shows that the singer is willing to put in the effort to make their love work, regardless of any challenges they may face. The lyrics "And I'd do all the things we didn't, 'cause I choose you, Yeah, I choose you, I do" encapsulate the message of the song - choosing to fight for love even when it seems impossible.

Does anyone remember their first time hearing her music? I remember the first time I heard Chelsea Cutler's voice was middle school, I was probably 13 or 14. From "Anything for You" and "Your Shirt", to collabs with Kidswaste and beloved Jeremy Zucker. I just loved her music like no other. To sing, to listen to. Now I'm 20, still in love with Cutler, and her lyrics inspire my own music and songwriting. Incredible how far she's come and how much further she will go!
