By 2017, several of Cutler's songs (including "Your Shirt") garnered numerous streams and led to collaborations that year with acts like Louis The Child ("Slow Down Love"), ayokay ("The Shine"), Kidswaste ("Tonight"), and Kasbo ("Found You"). She signed a record deal with Ultra Records in late 2017 and released her first EP, "Snow In October". After touring with Quinn XCII in early 2018, Cutler released two independent mixtapes, "Sleeping With Roses" and "Sleeping With Roses II." She also went on her first two nationwide headlining tours in support of each mixtape, both of which sold out in advance.
In March 2019, she signed to Republic Records and released a joint EP, "brent", with friend and label-mate Jeremy Zucker shortly after. The EP features the single "you were good to me", which they performed live on The Today Show. It was also pressed on a limited edition white vinyl through the retailer Urban Outfitters. It was limited to a run of 1000 copies pressed. In May 2019, Cutler collaborated with Kygo on the single, "Not OK". It became her third collaboration (after "Slow Down Love" and "The Shine") to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number 9.
In late 2019, Cutler began releasing new singles, including "How To Be Human" and "Lucky" (featuring Alexander 23). Along with "Sad Tonight", the songs served as the primary singles for her debut studio album, How To Be Human, released on January 17, 2020 by Republic Records. On January 23, 2020 she performed the lead single, "Sad Tonight", on Late Night With Seth Meyers. That song became Cutler's first entry on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, peaking at number 32 in March 2020. In April 2020, she was featured alongside Quinn XCII on the Louis The Child track, "Little Things".
Cutler was also slated to perform at Coachella 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2020, she released a version of her song "Crazier Things" which features Noah Kahan.

the stars
Chelsea Cutler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't know when enough's enough
I don't know how to sleep in a cold bed
I'm tryin' not to think so much
Maybe I want your love forever, is that so bad to say?
Maybe we're meant to be together if God had his way
And if you ask why I've stayed and I'll stay for all I know
It's 'cause the stars said so
I like the way that I look in your sweatshirt
And being told, "I am enough"
And I know if it's right then it won't hurt
I'm tryin' not to think so much, oh
Maybe I want your love forever, is that so bad to say?
Maybe we're meant to be together if God had his way
And if you ask why I've stayed and I'll stay for all I know
It's 'cause the stars said so
It's 'cause the stars said so
Mm
It's 'cause the stars said so
('Cause the stars said so)
('Cause the stars said so)
The lyrics of Chelsea Cutler's song "the stars" depict a complex and uncertain relationship dynamic, where the singer is grappling with feelings of ambiguity and longing. The opening lines, "I don't know where you start or where I end, I don't know when enough's enough," suggest a sense of confusion and blurred boundaries within the relationship. The singer also expresses difficulty sleeping and overthinking, indicating emotional turmoil and introspection.
The chorus of the song delves into the singer's desire for a lasting and meaningful connection, questioning whether it is acceptable to yearn for love forever. The lines, "Maybe I want your love forever, is that so bad to say? Maybe we're meant to be together if God had his way," reveal a deep longing for a lasting bond and a belief in destiny or divine intervention in their relationship. The use of the phrase "if God had his way" implies a belief in fate or spirituality influencing their connection.
Further, the repetition of the phrase "It's 'cause the stars said so" emphasizes the theme of fate and cosmic alignment playing a role in their relationship. The singer finds solace and justification in the idea that their love is guided by the stars, suggesting a belief in destiny or a higher power influencing their connection. This sentiment reinforces the idea that their bond is meant to be and destined to endure despite any challenges they may face.
The closing lines of the song highlight the singer's contentment and comfort in their partner's presence, finding joy in simple moments like wearing their sweatshirt and feeling validated in their worth. The refrain "It's 'cause the stars said so" serves as a reassuring and affirming conclusion, suggesting that their love is celestial and preordained. Overall, the lyrics of "the stars" convey a mix of uncertainty, longing, and faith in a love that is meant to withstand the test of time, guided by the mysterious and powerful force of the stars.
