Jezebel
Chely Wright Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I give him love the best I can,
But you don't seem to understand.
It's not always deep,
But it's always true and he does not belong to you.
Hey, I do not forgive, and I do not forget.
I will fight for love, until the day

Jezebel, save your charms,
He'll be back here in my arms.
Oh how quickly you forget he's not yours yet.
He is not yours, not yet.

Gonna throw on this cotton dress,
Put lilac scent on the back of my neck.
I'll walk barefoot down that mountain-side,
Straight to your door.
Girl, you can't hide.
Cause I do not forgive,
And I do not forget.
I will fight for love until the day.

Jezebel, save your charms,
He'll be back here in my arms.
Oh how quickly you forget he's not yours yet.
He is not yours, not yet.

Standing out in the pouring rain,
Calling out my lover's name.
I know he won't leave me in the cold,
Send my baby home.
Send my baby home.

Jezebel, save your charms,
He'll be back here in my arms.

Oh how quickly you forget he's not yours yet.
He is not yours, not yet.

Overall Meaning

In "Jezebel," Chely Wright sings about a love triangle, where she is fighting for the affection of a man who is also involved with another woman, Jezebel. The singer is frustrated that despite her efforts to love him deeply and truthfully, he does not seem to appreciate it or understand how much she cares for him. She vows to fight for his love until the bitter end, refusing to forgive or forget the way Jezebel has encroached upon their relationship.

The lyrics reveal a sense of desperation and urgency, as the singer is willing to do whatever it takes to win back the love of her man, even going so far as to confront Jezebel directly. She dons a simple cotton dress and walks barefoot down a mountain path to Jezebel's door, calling out her lover's name in the pouring rain. The repetition of the phrase "he is not yours yet" underscores the singer's defiance and determination to reclaim what she feels is rightfully hers.

Overall, "Jezebel" is a powerful anthem about the lengths we will go to fight for love, and the intense emotions that can drive us to such extremes.

I thought this woman was the most beautiful lady in country music! I heard this song when I must have been... 11 or 12. She was the first album I ever bought. Chely should come back!

Such a playful video, my favourite song from Chely. She's such a great talent, and her girlfriend's a lucky woman.

It’s harder in the closet. Having to hide who you are lying to others and most of all yourself.

@jk-kr8jt

What are you talking about? Who was she hiding from? Is she another celebrity who escaped the cult call scientology? I just know that she is an extremely talented singer that hasn't put out an album in years. Wish she'd hit the recording studio again. Or at least tour.

@@jk-kr8jt Hiding as in closeted. She's gay, but wasn't out at the time songs like this were released.
