Oh You Crazy Moon
Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they met, the way they smiled, I saw that I was through
Oh, you crazy moon, what did you do?
And when they kissed,
They tried to say that it was just in fun
Oh, you crazy moon, look what you've done

Once you promised me, you know, that it would never end
You should be ashamed to show your funny face, my friend

There they are, they fell in love,
I guess you think that you're smart
Oh, you crazy moon, you broke my heart

Once you promised me, you know, that it would never end
You should be ashamed to show your funny face, my friend

And there they are, they fell in love,

I guess you think that you're smart
Oh, you crazy moon, you broke my heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chet Baker's song "Oh You Crazy Moon" are about a brokenhearted individual who is lamenting the power of the moon to bring lovers together and ultimately break their hearts. The song reveals the singer's anger and frustration towards the moon, which promised him that love would never end, only to witness the moon bringing two lovers together that broke his heart. The singer blames the moon for his misfortunes and believes it is a sneaky entity that breaks hearts.

The lyrics reflect the universal feeling of heartbreak and the blame that people often place on external entities instead of taking responsibility. The singer's pain and anger towards the moon highlight the desperation and hopelessness that can come with heartbreak. However, the lyrics also resonate with the idea that love, like the moon, can be both unpredictable and powerful.

Cuando se conocieron, la forma en que sonrieron, vi que había terminado
When they met, the way they smiled, I saw that I was through

Oh, luna loca, ¿qué hiciste?
Oh, you crazy moon, what did you do?

Y cuando se besaron,
And when they kissed,

Intentaron decir que era solo una diversión.
They tried to say that it was just in fun

Oh, luna loca, mira lo que has hecho
Oh, you crazy moon, look what you've done

Una vez que me prometiste, ya sabes, que nunca terminaría
Once you promised me, you know, that it would never end

Deberías avergonzarte de mostrar tu cara graciosa, amigo mío.
You should be ashamed to show your funny face, my friend

Ahí están, se enamoraron,
There they are, they fell in love,

Supongo que piensas que eres inteligente
I guess you think that you're smart

Ay, luna loca, me rompiste el corazón
Oh, you crazy moon, you broke my heart

Una vez que me prometiste, ya sabes, que nunca terminaría
Once you promised me, you know, that it would never end

Deberías avergonzarte de mostrar tu cara graciosa, amigo mío.
You should be ashamed to show your funny face, my friend

Y ahí están, se enamoraron,
And there they are, they fell in love,

Supongo que piensas que eres inteligente
I guess you think that you're smart

Ay, luna loca, me rompiste el corazón
Oh, you crazy moon, you broke my heart

This is a superb rendition of this lovely and obscure Jimmy van Heusen song. It is so simple, allowing the story to tell itself. Listen to some of the other recordings on YouTube--they can't leave it alone!

Critics said Chet's singing was monotone, expressionless. I disagree. His singing was like his playing, subtle, and actually very emotional. Chet was of the West Coast cool school. He was a minimalist, thus the expression was more subtle -- yet very real.

Anyone who would say Chet was "monotone" must be tone deaf.
