He started in regional theater when he moved to Seattle, and after moving to New York City, made his 2002 Broadway theatre debut understudying both male leads in the Tony Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2005, he originated his first Broadway leading role in All Shook Up earning him a Theatre World Award for "Outstanding Broadway Debut".

Jackson's albums include Original Broadway cast recording with All Shook Up (2005), Xanadu (2007) and Finian's Rainbow (2009). He has one studio album with Michael Feinstein called The Power of Two (2009).

In films, Jackson portrayed 9/11 victim and hero Mark Bingham in the 2006 Academy Award nominated United 93 which earned him the Boston Society of Film Critics 2006 award for "Best Ensemble Cast". He has also appeared in the films Curiosity and Hysteria. On television, he is a recurring series regular on NBC's 30 Rock, portraying Jack/Danny Baker. He also guest starred on several series including; Lipstick Jungle, Life on Mars, Ugly Betty and more recently Glee.

He is openly gay and an LGBT rights supporter, as well as an ambassador for amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) and the national ambassador for The Hetrick-Martin Institute. Jackson's partner, Monte Lapka, is a physicist; they have been together since 2000.

Listening to it with eyes close i was transported back to the time when music was so pure and full yes i agree with one of your listeners full of true feelings. Just brilliant, Ben. I'd give up a leg to be able to play piano with your virtuosity and grace. Your voice was perfectly matched to the keyboard's phrasing in both timbre and expression. This is such a heartfelt song, sentimental without being trite, honest in its message of how we all desire that security only true love brings. This is lovely. Tonight my cat Gershwin died, and this song was very special to hear, as I remembered the good times with him. He was there for me and my sister during some tough times, and was very important to me. Thank you for singing/playing it so beautifully.

You have a really lovely voice. It's soothing, definitely a voice I could relax to. This is a lovely, unstrained and gentle rendition of this song, and your voice is perfect for it really. This is the first time that anyone has ever sent me a music video link that I really enjoyed, and was grateful for the heads up. Thank you for not making it into a Rap song! (Rap is crap!) The voice, music and arrangement are perfect for this song. I’m very happy to see that the art of music has not died. Making it as a musician is a long road and a little wheel, it takes a lot of turns to get there, and you do have the required talent. You just need to get noticed, your supporters will grow.

You have a lovely voice tone/colour with a youthful sweetness in its delivery making this song especially so memorable. I am really impressed. One very small crit , one of the last me's sung is a trifle harsh & needs a bit more control. The world awaits you !! The piano accompaniment ? This is what dreams are made of . Exquisite.

I like your interpretation. As a person who is a vocalist and a harmonica player, I pride myself on my ability to recognize pitch. While the piano overshadowed your vocals in volume, I found your singing to have a pure quality that complimented your playing. I would like to hear a version with the introduction (Ella's introduction) included because I feel it adds some emotion and context, but even without that, I feel like you have successfully made this song yours. Project more. That's all.

This is great. I must admit I like the voice more in a lower register, like it is near the end, but that doesn't mean that it's bad. In general, you have really nice voice with a tone like butter. As for the piano arrangement, WOW! It's beautiful and gets really dramatic towards the end. This is good work!

You remind me of a young man I knew growing up who I used to sing with, someone I lost, who was very dear to me. You have an incredible tone, firm control, heart and emotion. Thank you for sending me your video. You have a lot of talent Ben! I'll admit, I like this song a lot, probably more when sung by a female, based on the lyrics, but still it's fine for a male singer too. I do like Frank Sinatra's version (1945) in a lower key and at just a little more relaxed pace. You do have a beautiful voice with tenderness and emotion, as well as your talent on the piano. I imagine much of your young life has been spent practicing. It shows! Best wishes in your career!

Thanks for sharing this with me. I first encountered this song on a collection Of Willie Nelson tunes. I'm not a music critic but I found your version very easy to listen to enjoy. I like this kind of music to begin with and this is real good IMO. This is a wistful, musing kind of song and it works good the way you did it as far as my ear goes.

Ive listened to it a few times and even though its not to my taste, there's a lullaby-like quality to it that appeals. i have never heard it sung that way, even by a mellow artist like Blossom Dearie . you have a powerful voice that you've restrained here and the use of falsetto is lovely as it adds to the innocence and vulnerability of your version. I'd be interested to hear a powerful number from you...I'm betting you can sing operatic style? thanks!
